It helps the Caps that Backstrom and Oshie are out as well? It would be like if the Pens did not have Malkin and Letang but younger stars instead! But the direction the teams has gone in is brutal! The Caps have made a lot of smart signings and trades.

Instead, they're doing a variation of what the Pens are doing. Clear some cap space, acquire some draft picks and young players, develop your existing prospects, start integrating them into the lineup, and then spend in free agency/trades.
