It was all Matheson's fault....I mean.....Marino's......Petry's.....Petry's. Definitely Petry's....

Oh wait! Is that why they are going to trade Letang? It's been his fault the whole time?!?! Well...I guess there is only ONE way to find out. Trade Letang and see. Nothing else you can do.

I mean Marino just got traded again for largely the same reasons he got traded from here.

Petry got old and stinks.

Letang got old and stinks.

I would gladly trade Letang, and I’ve been his biggest defender on HFPens for the better part of 15 years.

Literally stopped reading right there. Thanks for typing all of that out though.

Sorry you can’t look at things objectively and be realistic.

I've never liked Letang, ever, any half decently offensive defenseman would put up his career numbers dishing the puck to Malkin and Crosby for 20 years. He should have been traded years ago.

I do think Letang's career was very good, I'm not gonna try to downplay his contribution. But yeah, he's like, several tiers below Sid and Geno in terms of overall career as well as impact in the franchise imo.

Couldn't give a shit less if he's dealt tbh. Would probably be the best for all parties.

Still doubt he'd waive though. Hell, with how terrified this team seems to be when it comes to potentially upsetting Sid even the littlest bit, I doubt they'd risk making Sid frown by trying to trade Letang.

letang was too high variance to ever be a truly norris caliber defenseman, but that doesnt mean when he wasnt at his absolute best that he wasnt a full on force. that said, the flip side of high variance is that when he was off he was abjectly terrible

Letang has been huge for this team over the years and I'm a bigger fan than most.

But it was pretty comical that they not only gave him that contract but paraded him around that entire offseason like he was not just one but several pegs above Evgeni Malkin.

To be fair he had just had a pretty outstanding season the year prior. But like... be smarter, Penguins.

I also think this team would earn a whole lot more respect and patience from the fanbase if they actually just came out and said "Yeah, uh, shit's f***ed up. It's gonna suck for like 5 years while we rebuild. Sorry. Too late to salvage this." As opposed to trying to fool people with this "contend while retooling" bullshit that's never, ever gonna happen. It's just an insult to suggest, be honest.

-edit- I wonder if the "illness" keeping Letang out is Dubas' phone. Probably not, but eh. Fun to imagine what kind of Nathan Moon-esque prospect we could get for Tanger.

Letang to Montreal makes too much sense right now. He would probably waive, they have the space, he would be a fantastic mentor for Hutson and that young D core, and they have the picks/prospects we need. I think we'd actually get a fairly solid return.

To MTL:
Letang

To PIT:
2025 1st (lower of the MTL/CGY picks, top-10 protected)
One of Owen Beck/Oliver Kapanen/Joshua Roy/Michael Hage
Josh Anderson/Brenden Gallagher (cap dump)

I honestly do not think we get anywhere close to that for Letang. I could see something like Anderson+2nd for Letang.

I don't really care about any of these players individually. I'm just pointing out that there has been a revolving door of defensemen (and bottom 6 forwards) and each time we're told "Those other guys stunk. THESE are the guys Sullivan needs to be successful."

Like I've said for years... miserable as the attendance figures were that season... it's amazing they even averaged THAT much. That team in particular was unbelievably bad. And not nearly as entertaining as everyone's collective nostalgia would lead you to believe. That team would have begged for even a Kevin Hayes or a Blake Lizotte. I remember people being stoked to have Mike Eastwood and Brian Holzinger on the team FFS.

So Kan Dingerski actually had a good podcast yesterday (sort of) in which he correctly states that Sullivan doesn’t have a defensive structure…what to do in the D zone is based on figuring out who to take in the Dzone…it’s kind of free flowing and requires high hockey IQ…and he says the players Dubas brought in don’t fit that, including EK, because they’ve had most success playing within structure that doesn’t require them to think…

On the other hand, are there really D men available for Dubas to get who have wheels, high hockey IQ and haven’t come out of a structured D system? Those are unicorns not available to Dubas in FA or trade…maybe the coach should change his D approach to fit the players? lol…something Kan failed to consider as another DK-initialed Sullivan apologist lol.
The bolded is the answer. And this has been an issue with Sullivan for years. Instead of adjusting things to fit the players he has, he constantly forces the team to play a style/system its incapable of playing.

It's ridiculous that he'd employ a system that only like 0.01% of NHLers can play in rather than a system that fits any and all players.

"Our system is great as long as you think the game like prime Wayne Gretzky, have the hands of prime Mario Lemieux, skate like prime Bobby Orr, and are as strong and powerful as prime Gordie Howe."

11k is generous...the igloo was half empty most nights. They had a promo where if you signed up for their mailing list, theyd send you 2 free tickets. Needless to say my cousin and I had 15 email addresses in 2004.

Also, thats Hobey Baker winner Brian Holzinger. Have a little respect.

Oh for sure... but hey revenue is revenue I suppose. I guess my main point is that I'm not nearly as sure as some that the Penguins have a fairweather fanbase.

Also... yeah... I went to a ton of free games back in those days lol. That and student rush tickets.

Holzinger is OK but he was no Mike Zigomanis

There was a time not ALL that long ago where it was easier, cheaper and more feasible to get tickets by just traveling to DC and see the Penguins play, there. They were THAT hot of an item in Pittsburgh.

And as a side bonus it's the Capitals so you knew they were gonna win like 75+ percent of the time.

Far removed from those days.

I love Letang, but it doesn’t make any sense for him to be here anymore beyond feelings. His contract was given to ensure a couple more elite years on the last years of plausible contention and it didn’t happen that way, at all.
