I think Malkin is by rights a center and is generally done a disservice not playing center. And I find it a bit eyeroll worthy regardless of how much I respect and appreciate Crosby that the minute he struggles Malkin is uprooted to help but when it's the other way around the only thing Malkin gets is rocks thrown at him by everyone from the fans to the GM, dumped off the first PP unit and progressively shittier linemates.
i was for moving geno to wing but this is not the way it needs to be done. it's almost like sully wants to show everyone how bad an idea that was, so he put him in the worst possible position he could just so he will look bad.

EK just played the long game in getting revenge against this franchise for employing Matt Cooke when he sliced his Achilles.

He's coming in to finish the saboteur job Ron Hextall started.

Boy that doesn't sound familiar!

THIS is the most egregious case.

I've racked my brain (lol for whatever little THAT is worth) and looked at all time tenure lists and Sullivan is kinda king of the shit pile as far as I can tell.
It feels that way. There were coaches on bad teams who stayed forever and didn't make playoffs', but they weren't really expected to with those rosters.
This is worse than that.

Also... I'm sorry in advance because I know this is a rather simple line of reasoning but I think it's a good question -- isn't THIS when a coach as truly incredible as Mike Sullivan most assuredly is (because all our betters tell us so) show his value? Dig deep and get his team going? Find an edge? Isn't a great coach supposed to find ways to make something out of nothing? Even Disco had runs where he did that...

I really think it is. I cannot find any other comparable examples.

To his credit he used to get good results when the team was battered, but that's far in the rear-view mirror now.
Dude's a shell of himself. 2016 me would be so saddened to hear what happened to him.

I could not disagree with this sentiment more. Look at what a mid ass roster like the Caps is doing. I will die on the hill that the Pens are a beach ball behind held 100ft underwater by Sullivan's incompetence. Replace him with literally anyone and they make the playoffs
The Oilers replaced their inexperienced coach with McDavid's former tee-ball coach and they went all the way to the Cup Finals.

The only thing that makes sense is that Sid doesn't care to change coaches at this point in his career.

There's no other way to explain how multiple owners and Gms are still employing that bum

2016 me would raise an eyebrow but not be surprised.

People whine about how coaches are "treated" in the NHL (poor lambs!) but this is for good reason.

Nah you don't get it, just because this worked twice for the Sid Pens don't mean it will again. Just because they're old or something

Trotz and Ruff.

I thought about those and while both had longer tenures and I'm willing to give them consideration for the dubious honors of first place... even in their cases there seemed to be less tolerance for failure. Neither coach seemed to last long after their teams missed the playoffs. Though in Ruff's case he had a three year non-playoff run followed by two seasons in the playoffs then two more out and fired. So I'd be willing to say that's maybe somehow shittier.

Congrats Lindy Ruff... you are an even bigger leech than Mike Sullivan.

Imagine seeing Kirk having the baby Pens go 7-2 and playing well with players Sullivan doesn't want to use and you're like ok so what is it, is it the players or is it the coach? Because it seems we keep blaming the players when shit it might be the dumb twat we kept praising - FSG.

On a side note: I'm happy for Jarry playing well in wbs, so many keep wanting to shit on him and that's fine, I still think there's a great goalie in there somewhere and maybe this stint boosts him back to it. 4-0, 1.69GAA,.946sv% and facing 31 shots per game average. He deserves to come up and play games when he's back to build up some value and hopefully be moved to a team. Best for all parties involved.

Yep. He will be coming back and I hope he plays well for us. It's best he plays like a 3.5 or 4 million goalie for himself and us.
His contract is buyout proof essentially so I would rather waive him to the AHL if he comes back and continues to suck.

Caps actually play their young players.

Also, all summer I was arguing we should acquire Dubois and Chychrun. Now we are going to act like they have sub 30 year old players.
Yep I was on the train with you Gurgs.

Get PLD and let him play 2C.
Chychurn as well.

Solid buy lows that could give us actual youth. Both 26.

I'm trying to think back to my 30 years of watching this league...
What coaches have had immunity from failure to this extent? What are some egregious cases?
Since the Pens trajectory gets compared to them a lot, the first one that came to my mind is Blashill with the Wings. He made the playoffs in his first year, but then missed the playoffs 6 years in a row finishing 7th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 7th, and 6th in their division.

I'd argue the Pens had a better roster than those Wings teams, particularly last year, but they still had some solid players. Hank and Kronwall were still kicking around for a while, added Larkin, Nyquist, Tatar, Mantha, Athanasiou, Bertuzzi, etc.

We missed the playoffs by a point the last two years, with a horrible power play last year. A decent coaching job would have gotten us an extra point at least. Sullivan is completely worn out here and it is clear he has no answers and the players know it.

didnt Yzerman kind of say that he didnt feel the need to switch coaches until he felt the team was on the verge of competing?

That sounds pretty Yzerplan-esque so probably. On the surface that seems to make some sense until you ask the rather obvious question "hey aren't you helping develop the players I draft?"

I think GMs like to keep the coaching change in hand for as long as possible. Once you change the coach you don't really have any defense from people concluding that you, the GM, suck at your job.
Same reason admin keeps shit middle management supervisors around

Heaven forbid the crosshair moves to them

Easier to have line staff get fed up and quit

If you are reading this Kyle... it's OK... we all already know you're a shit GM so you can fire the coach now please and probably also yourself while you're at it.

I really can't see us winning tonight and will be surprised if it is even close. Probably a hatty for Ovechkin and several goals from Tom Wilson just to make it extra painful. It is too bad it isn't at home so the home fans can make their displeasure known.
