This place has a weird defense mechanism for Malkin that somehow doesn't apply for Letang. I don't really get it.

If you say Malkin is toast and the team would be great to get out of his contract, you'd get an army coming after you. Say the same thing about Letang? Not a problem.

Kris Letang's defensive game is completely eroded and he's being asked to play 20+ minutes as one of our main defensive elements a night. I think that's the difference.

"Fans who don't want to see the guys ride off into the sunset disgust me."

"Please get rid of Letang even though we "love him.""

If the return is Mitch Marner for Letang. Yes, please get rid of him. I'd trade Malkin for Mitch Marner too. That's how you extend the window if Toronto is stupid enough to do it.

It's because he sucks

Give him the time in the NHL to prove it.

I remember being told by fans on here all season before Puustinen came up that he was too small and didn't have the defensive element to play in the NHL. Weird how that one worked out.

DOC wasn't a top six winger. Weird how that one worked out.

Ruhwedel was just the best you could get as a # 6/7 D. Weird how that worked out.

Absolute LOL at criticizing Letang's defense when talking about him and Malkin.

Isn't Malkin the guy the team is actively talking about moving to wing because he can't cut it defensively as a center?

I am with Gurgle on the whole youth issue with this franchise. I have been saying it for years that this team's blind eye toward the future has been the biggest issue. The coach is part of this ongoing issue because he clearly prefers experience (even shitty minor-league experience) over youth. And the core likes the coach who likes experience over youth, so the GMs catered to the coach and the players. Or at least, they did.

Dubas seems to be different. He seems interested in actually getting younger. AND, can you argue with the small-sample-sized results when we actually decided to get younger last season?

Now, I completely disagree with Gurgle on trading a shit ton for Marner. I love Marner, but trading more youth (not to mention Letang) for him is nuts.

If we sit back and wait it out, we might be able to land Marner. Otherwise, move on to someone else. Someone who could be had for free, like a UFA.

Trading future picks should be completely off the table right now. Learn from history and stop making the same mistake as a franchise.

I am cautiously optimistic that Dubas will stick with his plan to get younger.

I doubt it. Sounds like the usual Malkin sucks narrative we get every summer from the usual xenophobes.

If Evgeni Malkin was expected to carry our PK and play 25 minutes a night, all situational minutes, I'd likely be concerned.

Letang in a Marner deal would solve quite a bit for this team tbh.

Not attached to any of the pieces on this roster though so - show it to them and let them make it work. Marner is an improvement on the entire forward group at this point. Pickering, Petts, Rakell, Smith, Eller, Jarry - whatever. Make it happen.

(Sid obviously omitted from conversation)

Are Penguins fans really saying they wouldn't trade Letang, a 1st and Pickering for Marner in the trade forum?
I don't think it reasonable mostly because I don't think Letang would go to Toronto - Marner to Pittsburgh. Both Marner and Letang have NMC so that is problematic. You, yourself say Pittsburgh sucks to live in so why would a young guy like Marner want to come here? Our biggest selling point might be our GM handed out big contracts in Toronto so he would probably grossly overpay Marner on his next contract.

Marner probably wants a quiet media market with little expectation.

The deal would never be made because Letang probably would never waive for Toronto.

I'd trade either one of EK or Letang for Marner if they would go. I seriously doubt Letang would waive so there is that. EK's neutered by Sullivan and I don't have an attachment to him so if the right deal came by, I'd trade EK in a nanosecond (same goes for Letang if he'd waive).

Erik Karlsson has not been Erik Karlsson so far with the Penguins, but we are confident that Mitch Marner will be Mitch Marner under this head coach?

I am not trading a HOF defenseman until we see who comes in to run the defense and PP.

i mean our org is bad at player evaluation. No doubt about that. But nobody else cares to give him a chance either.

Maybe every nhl team is wrong but I doubt that.

I have a German Shepard who is turning 14 this fall. He's getting old. I see it mostly in his back legs. He's losing strength there. His face is also getting to that "old man dog" face.

If someone came and asked me to trade him for a 4 year old dog, it would "make sense". The four year old would be healthier, faster, and just as stubborn. But I probably still don't do it. I let him continue to get on the couch and bed whenever he wants without having to ask anymore. He's earned it. I'll deal.

I imagine the Penguins would have similar thoughts about Letang. Unless he asks out.

I would trade EK for Marner though.

Keeping the dog is not the same as keeping the Letang.

Put the Dog to sleep, best for everyone. Had a good run, now nappy time!

What I'm to explain to you is that, I don't think the Penguins GIVE. A. f***. about Letang's age. Otherwise they wouldn't have resigned him at 35+.

The idea of "they should trade him to get younger" ignores every single human factor involved that, ironically, played a role with him resigning in the first place. Course you're in HR, the last thing I would expect you to understand is the people side of an organization.

Neat. I was expecting the Penguins to actually trade Letang for Marner. Now I’m gonna have a big sad summer.

All of Crosby, Malkin and Letang deserve to end their careers as a Penguins. Enough said.

I'd be for trading for Marner if he came with an extension and it didn't cost anything too egregious, I'd be fine with something like Smith, Pickering, Broz and a 1st. But I'm sure as hell not moving out one of the core guys who deserves to finish their career here, especially under the logic of "they're going to have negative value in the future!".
