I think that mostly depends on how much the cap rises after the 2023-2024 season. The only sizable contracts expiring after next season are Carter and DeSmith, which opens up $5 million in cap space. If the cap goes up by $4 million in addition to those two deals expiring, I think they should be able to afford him as long as he's not asking for like $10 million.

I'd expect Guentzel to get re-signed for something like 8x8 when his deal is done.

The TV revenue issue is going to put a dent in cap raises for a while I think. Or, put better, I wouldn't count on cap raises going forward.

I am actually all for this just because Miller is a huge hot head and it would be absolutely hilarious to see him playing on the same line as Jeff Carter. He'd be screaming at Carter within two shifts
That'd be fun to watch, but I'm sure he'd actually play with Geno and Zucker would bump to the third line.

You are a Letang fan. He has been bad this year and you've called a spade a spade. So props to you.

But what would the team be without him? Genuine question. And does he have the ability to rebound?>
Maybe he would if he got a better d partner than Brian Dumoulin.

I think a lot of Letang's struggles are of his own making and not Dumo's fault but that said an upgrade there might go a long way for Letang.

Letang has actually been far worse away from Dumoulin than with Dumoulin analytically.

I'd rather do Henrique dependent on how bad his injury is (week to week) and then target Boeser.

Instant 3rd line, fits the term/window. No Miller headaches, they can die on that sword.

I don't understand how the cap is going to go up with all the local rights holders going out of business. But maybe the cap isn't based on theem?

Having GMs that cannot decide over trade deals this much is crazy if that is what is going on.

I think this team would’ve been better investing in Petry or Burns as their # 1 D and not moving Marino which is what I advocated for at the time.

Shorter contracts that lined up with the core.

What does a Pens team with Miller look like, assuming such a trade would involve McGinn as a cap dump?

Guentzel-Crosby-Rakell
Zucker-Malkin-Miller
Heinen-Carter-Rust
Poehling-Blueger-DOC
(Archibald)

That bottom 6 is still a mess. Miller at 3C makes no sense to me either. If their goal is to compete this year...I think they simply have to upgrade the bottom 6 even if they get a big fish like Miller. I don't think it's realistic.

They're not going to compete this year. The benefit of adding Miller is mostly focused around improving the team long-term.

I feel like Hextall just tells a team what he's willing to pay for a guy and waits. If someone pays more, they take another deal, if they don't get a better offer they take the Pens' offer at the last minute. That happened with Rakell, it was after the deadline before the details came out and he went for cheaper than a lot of people expected.

No, he is stretching it out to the very last minute to save every single penny they can. Assets too. I don't mind that, it's the not knowing anything that is....

Late to the party. How do we make Miller work? Can the Canucks retain heavily this year, and little to nothing on new deal? Or is any/all retention transitory?

Miller @ 50% (2.625) this year, full cap hit (8M) or slightly retained (7M) next year

for

McGinn +?

Look at me - intrigued over a move that's a little gross. Honestly it's his NMC I can't stand. Miller at 7 is a deal you can work around in the future. 8? Well depends how much the cap raises. NMC? Big oof.
