Current regime did not acquire him. So, very possible he could be moved. Just a matter of the two sides find a deal that makes sense.
Yeah, this is exactly why I could see him being moved. Benning paid a massive price for him and gave him a sizable (but fair) contract extension. Then Benning got fired and the new regime took over.
JR and Alvin are looking to make changes to the Canucks and clear out some money that Benning left them with. Garland's a great player and is having a very strong season analytically, but I don't think he has quite lived up to what Benning paid for him. I also think Garland's the only "expensive player with term" that actually has any sort of value on the Canucks that Vancouver would even begin to consider trading.
It's a bit similar to the situation with Myers, in that it's a big contract that JR/Alvin inherited but didn't consent in. With Garland, it is a fair contract for a good player, so they don't need to move it like they need to with Myers. But you certainly understand the logic for why they could look into doing it. Trading Garland right now would be just like when JR traded James Neal in his first move with the Penguins, when Neal was basically a PPG winger and only 2 years into a 6 year, $5 million AAV contract.
Garland would cost more than Boeser (at least from the fans' POV).
Locked into a good contract, as well, versus Boeser and his high QO.
I imagine that this would only happen if Boeser can Vancouver can come together on a reasonable long term deal. I don't think Vancouver would trade Garland without having the Boeser situation at least somewhat progressing towards an extension.
