I think you're mixing team defense, which was excellent for large stretches, with the quality of the 6 defenseman. When completely 100% healthy, 50% of them are just OK or flat out stink.

The top half is strong enough to compensate.

Should be Lafferty in for Rodrigues. I don't think there's a chance E-Rod plays for us beyond this season, but Lafferty's shown his speed could be an asset for years to come. Probably not anything more than a 4th line guy, maybe 3rd line spot duty, but better than E-Rod and a more long-term option.
