Not really a different coach plays players to their strength. As bad as the bottom 6 was. It was way better in the begining of the season.

If this team makes no deadline moves it probably makes the playoffs even with this turd of a coach.
Granlund didn’t cost us any games, and Bonino and Kulikov played like 5 games. These guys were nobodies, added nothing, but did they cost us any games?

I think we would have made the playoffs if our brain dead GM acquired a good player.

It falls on both of them.

So the current depth chart heading into the offseason assuming RFAs re-sign (I know Hallander signed in Europe but perhaps that's contingent on him not making the NHL)...

Guentzel Crosby Rakell
O'Connor Malkin Rust
Poehling Granlund Nylander
Hallander Carter Puustinen
Gruden

Pettersson Letang
Joseph Petry
Smith Rutta
Friedman Ruhwedel

DeSmith
Gauthier

I like Barbashev. Think he’d even come relatively cheap for a top-6 player, like under 5 million per. Would work with Geno. Scores in a variety of ways. Physical. Not old.

Zucker’s old and his season was just too unsustainable and once those west coast offers come in he’s gone. We should just move on now.

Maybe Barbashev doesn’t score 27 but if he can get like 20, mostly at ES, for a million less, and make us harder to play against and better equipped for a playoff run that’s what we are looking for. And when his deal is wrapping up he’ll still be in his prime, unlike a 36 year old.
I'd think Barbashev gets more than 5 mil.

I have no clue how to fix this team. The entire bottom 6 could leave, the entire D corps sans Letang. And both goalies. And I wouldn’t miss a single player. I actually hate that the top 6, for the most part, is fine. With Zucker…. ugh I’d love him back but it’d need to be on our terms. I don’t see it happening. I think poehling could be a third/fourth tweener. DOC is fine for the 4th line. Granlund needs to go, somehow. Archi - bye. Carter is impossible to move so he needs to be 4th line only. The defense. I hate the defense. Petry blows but who would want him. Dumo. I love ya but it’s time. Petts…. It’s just so bland. Be offensive, be physical. Have some defining trait. There’s nothing with all three of them. Team really needs some type of kessel-esque addition. Don’t think debrincat is that guy but a splash move needs made.

So Dumo wants to be back, Zucker wants to be back, Jarry wants to be back.

I could live with Zucker and Jarry coming back if I really had to (though not a fan of it) but Dumo coming back would be awful. Sully can't help but play him too high in the lineup.

Any of the three would be awful, tbh. I like Zucker, I think he's a fine 3rd wheel, but the bottom-6 is gonna suck so they need a bigger scoring punch in the top-6 than what Zucker or Rakell can bring to Geno's line.

Jarry's shit, but he'll be back because GM goalie paralysis. Dumo's gonna be the worst signing of the summer, and I wouldn't be surprised one iota if it's with this team. Hell, I expect it.

we should let them all walk…replace $5.5M Zucker and $5M Granlund with younger players in Bunting and Compher

I can’t even imagine how happy some people on here would be if DOC got to be Malkin’s linemate.

They’d be overjoyed watching him go a whole season on that line scoring like 10 goals.

Zucker's production this season was pretty damn close to his career averages across the board. Slight uptick in goals per game by like .06 per game.
But the questions are, can he stay healthy again and can he fend off old age for a few more seasons.

To clarify, these were not proposed lines, just current depth chart, add a top 6 forward, O'connor goes to 3rd line and pushes Nylander to 4th.

It's gonna kick ass to re-sign Zucker, have him immediately go on the shelf for months with injury, and have the law of averages catch up with Sid or Geno since they both had a fully healthy season last year, so they're due to miss like 30+ games. At least 2C Mikael Granlund will save the day. Add in a potential return of Dumo, Jarry's inevitable new deal with the team, and Sully getting at least one more shot behind the bench--things are shaping up to be awesome.

Any top-5 picks to keep an eye on next draft?

Be more upset about Dumo and Carter playing 82 games and sucking. Hope our next gm isn't dumb

Going to leave this here, because I like to see people froth at the mouth...

In all seriousness, I think a major issue facing the Penguins is the young guys aren't that good. Once DOC started to figure it out a bit, he got a consistent spot in the lineup. But he hasn't played like anything other than a third or fourth liner.

I like POJ. His speed and his offensive potential are intriguing. But there is no question he hit a wall and possibly should have been a healthy scratch had the Pens been healthy on defense.

Nylander is a poor man's Danton Heinen.

I'm not wowed by anyone in WBS, including Puustinen. The only prospects down there that intrigue me are Poulin, who has a long way to go to get his feet under him, and Blomqvist, who will need a full season in net to show where he is.

If the Penguins had the 2023 equivalents of Rust, Guentzel, even Kuhnhackl and Wilson, and Sullivan wasn't playing them, I'd have an issue. These guys can't hold those guys' jockstraps.

You wouldn’t have an issue with anything Sullivan did or didn’t do, DP. It’s just not your style. Never change, see you next summer.

What is he going to say, I hate young players? Look at the last two years, complete useless turds got to play in seemingly every game. Sceviour, ZAR, Jankowski, Simon. Gaudreau would never had gotten a chance without injuries to the turds.

What young players should Sullivan have played but didn’t?
Why didn’t we try Puustinen one game this season and only 1 game last season? The team almost waived POJ too. We still don’t know if Smith is any good, we traded a top 4 dmen for him for Christ sake. He’s deflecting blame but his hands were dirty along with sleepy. I have a feeling neither one of those idiots even bothered to follow the AHL.

I can’t wait until the stories of how dysfunctional this team was come out, and Sully will play the victim.
