Penguins get: Panthers 2026 1st and Samoskevich

Hawks get: Knight and Schmidt (needed for FLA to squeeze under cap)

Panthers get: Karlsson @ 6M and Nedeljkovic @ 1.25M (retained 50% by Hawks)

Looking at Panthers roster, they could use Karlsson I think. Getting him for 2.5 seasons at $6M would be huge, and Ned is a great backup to Bob. They go all in for a shot at b2b cups.

Penguins have to retain a lot ($4M) on EK. But getting a 1st and quality, young roster player is great. Ned is a decent goalie but not the long term answer for us.

Hawks get Knight for the price of Schmidt (cap dump, UFA at years end) and retaining 1.25M on Ned for next 2 years. This depends on how they view Knight, but a change of scenery for him maybe be good. The elite potential may still be there.

Thoughts?

Doesn't really work for Hawks

We have Mrazek and Broissoit signed thru next year (Broissoit health is major ?)

And we have Soderblom as pending RFA who likely gets extended with his play this year (7-12-3 with 2.89 GAA and .909 sv pct) and with Broissoit health issue

And then Drew Commesso (2020 2nd rounder) down in Rockford

No room for Knight and why gamble he rediscovers his game when we already have a young goalie playing better than him?

Fair enough. I was figuring Mrazek and Broissot weren’t reasons they would say no to Knight.

But was not familiar with Soderblom and Commesso being options they view in long term plans so that is logical.

If anyone has suggestions, there is probably another team out there that would be willing to take the place of the Hawks and pay the retention to get ahold of Knight?

Hate this from a Panthers perspective
Ok. Any more context?

Looking at the Panthers defense, and given they are firmly in the cup window, I’d think they would love to add EK at only $6M.

And the price asked seems reasonable for a player of his caliber at that price tag.

Yeah, my bad, not really a constructive post.

I am a Panther/Shark fan and I just don't see Karlssons play style meshing with how the Panthers play. Especially at the cost of so many futures on a team that has so little

Hard no from Florida
Honest question, does FLA think their defense is all set?

As an outsider looking at it, certainly seems there is a hole in the top 4 that a guy like EK would be perfect for. And keep in mind, EK is not a rental. You get him for 2.5 years that certainly would cost a team good assets.

Too much coming from the Panthers side and I don’t understand why the Penguins would be trading Nedjelkovic.
Because the panthers would need a backup goalie, and the Pens would be silly to turn down a trade for Ned. He’s not our long term guy and we are mostly a dumpster fire anyways. If a team asks for him to be included in a deal that returns good assets, the answer is an easy yes.

Appreciate the follow up. Is Florida missing Montour? I don’t see a guy that filled his shoes from last years cup run, and EK kinda plays similar to him.

Losing a retention slot just to throw Nedjelkovic in the deal is silly.

I can understand the comparison. Montours best assets are his fitness levels and character, two areas that EK seems a bit lacking.

I do think the Panthers could use a top4 RD, I just don't think EK is the guy. I'm also quite high on Samoskevich and the org seems to like Knight a lot.

Don't see Zito willing to unload both Samoskevich and Knight.
Bob only has 1 year left and his decline is closer than you think.

Don't mind the addition of Karlsson but not doing both the 1st and Samo.

A few weeks ago I proposed Karlsson at like 6 or 7 million to Florida for 2026 1st, Rodrigues and another piece or two. Some Penguins fans were on aboard with it.

I would be on board with that base. Being that we just took on Heinen and Desharnais, would it be possible to take a guy back if we are taking ERod?

We have Heinen, Acciari, Hayes, and Lizotte all in a decent price range. Would you be willing to take Acciari? Replacement C/W with energy that Florida is already familiar with. I think otherwise, the Penguins might be taking on too much cap especially with the recent additions and them all having extra years.

We could simplify it too with something like Karlsson @$7mil for Florida 1st + late pick or B prospect.

Karlsson at 6M (that’s 4M retained) for 2.5 years is a very good asset though. Really don’t think a 2026 1st and Rodrigues gets it done. Would have to be a pretty darn good piece added and I don’t see that on FLA outside of Samo.

A late 1st and Rodrigues would be like a rental price. Not a guy you’re getting for 2.5 seasons.

So idk maybe there’s no fit between these teams if FLA balks at that price

Panthers aren’t moving Knight, he’s been playing extremely well and Bob is getting older. Also not losing Samo or the 1st for Karlsson as part of that package.
Admittedly I don’t watch the games so can’t say for sure, but Knights stats this year don’t scream “playing extremely well”

I think Zito would be interested in Lizotte of the trio listed.
I'm kind of bullish on moving Rodrigues, he still holds some value IMO and Samoskevich could use some extra minutes in middle 6 next year and beyond.

Florida currently have 45/50 contracts so they can take on extra warm body contract for current season.

2026 1st
Rodrigues - 2 years left @ 3 million
D or F prospect - B level

For

Karlsson - 2 years left, retained to 7 million
Lizotte - 1 year left @ 1.85 million

Pittsburgh could still recoup an additional pick for Rodrigues in July if need be.

That would be a big no for the Hawks. Knight’s qualifying offer is going to be pretty substantial fora guy who has yet to show he can be a number one and as others have mentioned Soderblom, Commesso and Gajan are coming through the system so goalie depth probably isn’t a priority right now.

Watch the games, don’t stat watch. He started out mediocre, has come on stronger since and has had very good showings in his last outings.

I have zero interest in Karlsson, actually less than zero.

Yes, I would do that.

First 10 games vs last 10:

4-4-1, 2.4 GAA, .896 sv%
5-4-0, 2.2 GAA, .914 sv%

Florida has kind of been conserving all year, picking and choosing when to turn on the Champion level mindset and Knight has managed to boost his sv% big time despite the inconsistent team effort in front of him.
Panthers fans have been very happy with his turnaround from earlier in the year, squashing some uncertainty of his issues from a couple years ago he can become a #1 goalie.

EK is a luxury the Panthers don't need, particularly at the cost of Sammy, a 1st, and Knight (who is having a good season, compared to his last stint with the team). The team could use another d-man, but Karlsson isn't the guy.

No it could use improvement, however that price is way too much.

Ek having more years isn't a good thing when he's 34+
