Been saying this for a few years to trade Crosby, Malkin, and Letang since Pens are shot. Rebuild will be done in 3 years. Let them chase some more cups. Bring them all back to retire at the end.
Add EK and they can do a very somewhat fast rebuild. The assets coming back in theory should expedite things.

Here is what I think the value would be for these players...

-Pettersson: 1 year at $4 million 2nd + Prospect
-O'Connor: 1 year at $925k 2nd
-Eller: 1 year at $2.45 million 3rd
-Rust: 4 years at $5.125 million, Penguins likely need to take a bad deal back - No value. Likely only way you get out is a a bad contract swap.
-Rakell: 4 years at $5 million, Penguins likely need to take a bad deal back - No value. Likely only way you get out is a a bad contract swap.
-Nedjelkovic: 2 years at $2.5 million - 4th

I think it's evident that this team sucks and desperately needs to tear down the roster. The amount of trade chips the Penguins have is a bit limited, but I think the main ones are:
I think it's evident that when Crosby resigned, it came with a tacit understanding that they will not blow open the team before he retire.

Now do it knowing Kyle Dubas will be negotiating these deals. If we get more than a 3rd for Pettersson while not taking a cap dump like Bunting back, I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

What's the cost for Blomqvist?
I can't see a cost controlled goaltender being moved.

It'd be

DOC 900k or 950
Pool Party 700k
Petterson 4 mill
Eller 2.65

1 Year left on deals all good cap hits.

Karlsson - 3 playoff runs left. I can see Penguins retain let's say 4 million.

6 million dollar Karlsson people would be calling Pittsburgh up.

Absolutely comical decision by the Pens. This team will be wandering the wilderness for a decade plus if they let this core see out these contracts.

It was evident 2-3 years ago to blow it up. You just can't do that when Malkin and Crosby had no interest in moving on.

Pittsburgh is stuck until both of them retire.

That's the direction they chose 2+ years ago when they re-signed Malkin and Letang.

Let them ride out together into the sunset.

You can have an opinion on if that was the right move or not. It's not going to change that they won't be trading any of the three.

Karlsson and Bunting are also potential trade chips, but both need to start playing better for either to be worthwhile in a discussion (plus Karlsson would require significant retention and the Penguins only have 1 retention slot left this year). I think everyone else on the team is either untradeable, won't be traded or has no value.

A couple of ideas I have:

-Pettersson to Vancouver for Elias Pettersson (defenseman) and a 2nd
-Rust to Detroit for Copp and additional futures
Too complicated.

Plan B. Do none of the above, and instead fire your damn coach.

I don't even dislike him, I think he's a good coach. But all coaches have shelf lives in hockey, and he's way past his.

Also - Crosby & core are notorious for reacting well to coaching changes. Why in the world would Penguins not do this?

Yeah, comical to reward the 2nd best player in franchise history that brought them 4 SCFS.
I don’t think he meant it like that.

Also , Gurgs, bobholly has a good point, Dubas will probably fire Sullivan before trading players
