Confirmed with Link: Penguins and Mike Sullivan part ways

I mentioned a report that the Rangers are leaning towards giving their 1st this year to the Penguins, but even if they don't, I'm not really sure the Rangers are well set up in a position to be that much better next year. They'll for sure get a jump, but they have very little cap space and any open space will likely go towards paying Miller and Cuylle. They could trade Kreider to open up some money, but I feel like Kreider is the exact kind of player Sullivan would want to keep to see if he can rebound.

The Rangers next year may just be their 2024-2025 roster with Sullivan as the coach, and they'll actually be making changes to improve the team in the 2026 off-season. I think that's beneficial for the Penguins if they get the Rangers 2026 1st, Sullivan will provide a boost to them but I still think that team isn't going to fit Sullivan's system very well.

I think this is a situation where I’m truly okay with whatever happens in terms of what year we get the Rangers pick. 11th this year? Cool. Weak draft class but still should get a solid prospect. First rounder next year? Cool. Something to look forward to and even if the pick is in the 20s, it’ll still be a solid prospect because it’s a deep class. But obviously there’s potential for it to be a top 10-15 pick.

Looks like no player ever called out the staff under Sullys tenure. Closest thing you have is Roenick spitballing about him getting tuned out in Feb 2024 but it’s Roenick.

Just lame how much real estate he has in some people’s heads.

Happy he’s gone though. Since we have that NYR pick I can’t wish him future success either.

I think you’re right as currently constructed. But I think Drury is gonna try to make some big moves so I wanna see what happens before I write them off completely.

Also them turning around could be as simple as Shesterkin puts in a Vezina-like year and that’s that.

Did anyone ever call out Bylsma? Hell, Shero gave up his position for him. Byslma might have been even more of a “players coach” than Sullivan.

This was right before he was traded. He was traded 11/12 and 11/11 we lost to Dallas 7-1 so I’m guessing the comments I’m thinking of came then. I can’t find anything on my phone now but I’ll try to look later.
 
I honestly believe the Rangers will be in a similar position the Penguins are in this year. They have literally nothing in their system, and their team has aged out and sucks. Sullivan isn't going to magically coach them to prominence. He will do what he did here, which was not win for almost a decade.

See I just don't see how they can get the money to actually make some moves, unless they move Lafreniere. I don't see them moving Kreider because Sullivan will want to keep Kreider. Zibanejad has a full NMC and likely won't waive. Beyond that, who's even left to move?

The Rangers have 5 $8+million AAV deals with full NMCs. They just don't have the roster flexibility to do much of anything.

I agree from like 2018 thru the first half of 2023-24

I think once you start to move out pieces like we have though it’s pretty fair for the team to stink. Like Jake and Petts went out the door and Kevin Hayes came in :laugh:

Not gonna blame Kevin Hayes for playing like Kevin Hayes haha

But like I said it’s really about the goalie. If you step back and simplify- Panarin and Fox both bounce back and Shesterkin plays better. We get pick 20-26 or so.

Division is weak. Im not saying they’re a top dog contender but macro level they could improve just on getting more from top guys.

I also see a path to dog shit if that makes you feel better.

This summer if they don’t move anyone that’s true but they have some big contracts coming off the books next summer…and it will be easier to move Kreider then too, which they will…

I could not care less with how the Rangers do after next year. I solely care about their draft pick. If they give up the 2025 pick, I won't even care how they do next year.

I'm not arguing for whether I see them being good or bad next year, I'm just saying that their team is mostly just going to be their 2024-2025 team but with Sullivan as the coach. I think their upside is a 2nd round loss where they give the Penguins a pick around #26 overall. More likely, I think they're a fringe wildcard/3rd in the metro team that gives the Penguins around #20 overall.

Those Cup teams were really stacked and I guess I’m just realizing it. Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, Letang, Guentzel, Rust, Kunitz, Bonino.

No coach wins without talent. They can certainly stand in the way but no system will make the players better than they are.
 
don't really care how rangers do except how it plays out for that pick we get from them.
but really it won't matter terribly overall. i lean towards this year only because it gives us an extra year to develop that pick, AND igor has shown that he can drag that roster to a presidents trophy. sure the other players had better years. but 90% of that season was their goalie.

Not quite sure what this is saying? Is it saying that JT Miller and Drury have a "rocky history" with Mike Sullivan? Presumably when he was a AC there like 15 years ago? Miller would have been a rookie and Drury is the man who f***ing hired him...so what's the "rocky history" there?
