Confirmed with Link: Penguins and Mike Sullivan part ways

If we’re going to follow the long franchise tradition of hiring a random alumnus to guide us through a period of terrible hockey…I suggest Ville Nieminen. Who has been known to rock a sweater vest behind the bench, even under a suit jacket.

Jesus f*** that's terrifying... he looks like one of the Titans in Attack on Titan.

Sullivan did an amazing job in 2017 without Letang, every series the Pens got better as the series went along.

The rest of the league caught up in the couple years and that was that but he was still a very good coach for some time there. He just got stale, no coach maintains success with one team for long in the NHL.
So maybe if the organization had canned him when they SHOULD have canned him, I for one might respect him a little bit more.

But it is what it is.

"Overall very successful tenure" might be a stretch.

If I'm doing my math right he what, missed the playoffs for three straight years and didn't get out of the first round of the playoffs for the three years before that.

Was he a good coach yes, was he here way too long, absolutely. This is a team that squandered a few years between the cups and when the bottom completely fell out by keeping a coach whose brand had gotten stale a long time ago.
Not a fan of his, well known, not hiding it, but 2 cups and a .600 winning percentage over 10 years is pretty successful, even if the last 4 years was complete ass

There are definitely worse coach options but I flat out do not want Rich Tocchet as this coach.

This team needs a young up and coming coach that has an extensive experience working with young players. Tocchet isn't that. Tocchet is Mike Sullivan 2.0, one that has been a worse head coach.
Not that I have any issues with any of the past eras of the Pens, nor do I have anything but praise for the way Ron and Mario ran the team when they owned it, but I have a feeling that this move is the start of a yinzer-free organization. I don’t see us pulling people from our past into our present/future, until Sid and Geno take up shop in the front office.

so to make a short story long: I don’t think Tocchet is even on their radar

Ultimately, Sullivan can pick his next coaching destination. No doubt he had gone stale in Pittsburgh, but nearly every other NHL coach would take his resume over their own. Cooper is really the only current NHL coach that can even compare.

I see some people wanting to bet on if Malkin has more or less points next season. I can set up a smart contract where the funds sit and collect interest and pays out to the winning parties.

I'm still so f***ing overjoyed.

Dubas has done well with his hiring so I am confident on him finding the right coach. He was the one to give Carbery his first NHL job.

I bet the convo was that Dubas wanted to bring in less veterans and wanted to make more space for youth and competition for them and Sullivan likely towed the same Torts line of not wanting to be a development coach.

Either way, I am so happy this day has finally come.

I gotta change my headline to “Sully Fired!!”

lol again that Mike Sullivan got fired like a dork ass teenager.
God I hope Dubas gave him a legitimate "pink slip" and had security watch him as he cleaned out his office.

The only thing that would make this better is if there was an embarrassing insult to injury moment on his way like when Hillary Clinton tried to steal the White House silverware and was forced to give it back.

"No Mike...no you may not take the Mario Lemieux poster in the trainers room nor can you keep the banners hanging in PPG".
