Penguins and Mike Sullivan agree to part ways

I'm waiting for the Penguins to be just as bad if not worse next season, just to see what it's blamed on.

No one is saying the roster is great. But Sullivan treats young players awful. He is terrible with a young team trying to rebuild which is what the penguins will be.

He is exactly the opposite of the type of coach the penguins should have right now.

He doesn’t want skill and just want fast grinders who can’t score.

Holy shit I never thought this day would happen.

I'll miss Sullivan genuinely, he was probably the best coach this organization ever had but it was time.
Your bus is so short you have to sit beside the bus driver.

Mike Sullivan is "probably" better than Scotty Bowman? is what you just said.

I'm super uncomfortable with the idea of McAvoy's father in law being his coach and also am sure the Bruins will be deep in the think of it.
When the 2015-16 season started, Sullivan coached the AHL Penguins, and Conor Sheary played for them. Sheary was dating Sullivan's niece.
By the end of that season, Sullivan was the Pens HC, he had made Sheary a full-time NHLer, and Sheary was engaged to Sullivan's niece. They went on to win two cups together.

Bottom line, I wouldn't be too worried about it. If anything, I'd be more cautious about how Sullivan's ego (and decision-making) would handle being the face of the Boston Bruins given his New England partisanship and pride.

Another season like 2024-25, and Kyle "Big Splash" Dubas will be joining Mike Sullivan. When Dubas' "Big Splash" - acquiring Erik Karlsson - resulted in trading away Jake Guentzel, the Penguins would have been justified in showing him the door.

Explain to me how trading for Karlsson resulted in trading away Guentzel?
When you look at the Guentzel trade, you have two possibilities: (A) he was traded because of a cap crunch, or (B) he was traded to improve the team. Do you think that trade was made to improve the team? If so, do you think that it did improve the team?

(C) He was an UFA, their most tradeable asset and was highly likely to test the market.

I can't say I'm surprised by this; most teams change coaches for the sake of making change long before this.
I guess this means we're overtly tanking for McKenna, but it depends on who the coach we hire is. Some are worse than others.
Pens fans, how much of the Sullivan hate is the job he’s done and how much of it is that the team has naturally been on the decline and it’s difficult for anyone other than like Crosby to come out of the last few years looking good?
It's because the team has naturally been on the decline and it's difficult for anyone other than like Crosby to come out of the last few years looking good, but the fanbase doesn't realize or accept this.
Could he do a better job with a different team? And do you believe he’s as good of a coach as his record of 2 Stanley Cups suggests?
Yes, and yes.
The reason I ask is because he’s obviously going to be the next Rangers coach.
Unfortunately, I think you're right.

Tell me you know nothing of this trade without telling me you know nothing about this trade.

Guentzel was traded because he wanted a nice fat deal (that he earned) and Dubas, acknowledging the team was ass, complacent and had no prospects used him to get 4 prospects. And the team has not been any worse with him gone, Rakell just slotted in his place and put up 70 points.

Bowman won 1 Cup and was so hated by the core players that he was run out of town immediately after winning it after the Pens massive choke the following year. He was there for 2 seasons.

If I was a coach or player, I would also be happy to get away from the gongshow the Pens have become under Dubas.

I mean, should've been Dubas.

But I thought Sullivan was gonna last a little after Crosby retired. But I think they either try and get Rick Tocchet or hire a rookie coach. My guess here is they hire either David Quinn or Jay Woodcroft.

As for Sullivan, I think he gets work but I found him to be quite overrated. I say he goes to the Rangers.

In Sullivan's last eight seasons, he made the playoffs four times and won a single series.
For context, in Jack Capuano's six full seasons with the Islanders, he made the playoffs three times and won a single series.
