I think PoMo gets a coaching job before the end of the season.

He is still the all time losses leader. Maybe some team starting a rebuild. Not likely another decent, underperforming team, and teams that are succeeding don't change coaches.

I'm fairly certain that the comments coming from the players, Chevy & Maurice himself can be taken at face value, that this was Paul's decision & he did so in an attempt to save the Jets season.

I in no way think bag skating the team caused anyone to consider firing Maurice.

Often the correct conclusion is the simplest, coaches changes often work & Maurice simply took one for the team in an effort to jump start the team back into contention.

If you wanted to begin putting on a tin hat, I'd suggest the threat of omicron variant causing the NHL to reconsider playing before zero fans again is a much more reasonable reason to for him to step away right now. Paul has been rather candid in all interviews including the one we just witnessed, that he didn't enjoy the experience of NHL games in a lockdown environment.

Hoping to wrong on this, but dark days may once again be upon us. NHL games being played at 50% capacity , zero fans or cancelled outright have all occurred over the past handful of hours.

I simply think that was maybe the final straw in him and the org coming to the realization that his message was no longer getting through. I'm sure he and the org have been aware for a while now that things were no longer clicking between him and the players and that came to a head this week.

I think they wanted to see if he could get it back on track after the loosing streak and when that didn't happen both realized it was over.

I still remember that dreadful WJC that Lowry coached. The knock on that team was discipline and a horrid penalty kill. Hopefully we don't see that here.

I wouldn't worry about that year at a short tournament coaching wise...

Canada's defense was undersized, some of the lowest talent in many years... Hickey, Dermott, Fleury, McKeowen, Hicketts... none of these guys are go to NHL players even now...

Their forward talent had a few real players like Point, Koneckny, Barzal... but the core of that team were flawed players like Perlini, Virtanen, Stephens and Strome...

The goaltenders were extremely underwhelming as well... Mackenzie Blackwood has a job in the NHL... but that's not saying much...

Not on Lowry... the writing was on the wall...

The team found a way to make it into the playoffs then promptly lost to a very talented Finnish team in the QF's 6 to 5... the Finns had some very good players such as Sebastian Aho, Miko Rantanen, Jesse Puljujarvi, Roope Hintz, Kasperi Kapanen and some guy named Laine.... they beat Russia in a tight game in the final...

The Finns played solid team defense throughout the tournament and had the advantage of being coached up in Finland through the year...

I have no concern with Lowry...

I can't believe some are already bitching about Lowry, Jesus give the guy a shot. Why were all the lines changed back yesterday at practice? I'm going to guess that was Lowry doing that. Lets see how we look tonight for 5 minutes before saying Lowry isn't the answer.

Gotta' give the guy a little rope. I give him a pass tonight. The guys might be a little flat, with this coming on a game day. I'll give him to the end of Sunday's game.

I mean Pittsburgh won their cup on the backs of an inexperienced HC in Sullivan.

I didn't want a retread so I am happy we are getting a different perspective.

Interim coaches are quite often successful until the interim label gets removed. Next year, reality sets in. Hope that doesn't happen here. The latter part, I mean.

Sorry to see Maurice go. But team needed a new voice, that is obvious. Maurice had a very good run here, and I believe he did a great job but took the team as far as he could, whether a new guy can take them further but who knows and personally I am not investing too much into this season as the way things are going with the world and Covid, the whole season could be kaboshed. There is multiple teams with half their lineups in Covid protocal, fans being restricted to either none or 50% capacity in some cities. I t just seems like it's becoming a waste of time to me and when a league is faced with these huge obstacles and the competitve balance is in jeopardy and multiple games need to be rescheduled and somehow magically stuffed back into the season somehow when there is no room to place games, then I tend to think is it worth it?

I'm actually happy to see Lowry get a chance to lead this team as well. I really wanted us to look outside of the old boys club of coaches and find someone else that may have a fresh view of things. I know Lowry has been around a long time as well, but I think he will feel some safety for the rest of the season, and perhaps use that to implement real changes, not just shuffle the deck chairs.

C'mon Dave, show us what you've got!
Agree 100%. I'm glad they are giving Lowry his shot. We will see what his vision is, but thank god we just didn't tap an old boys club, been around the NHL track a dozen times retread. Please Chevy don't hire Torts even if he offers to work for free.

Especially with 17-19 year olds, lol!

I don’t put any stock in that result.

Also looking back that wasn't a super strong team. Outside of Point, Marner, Chabot, Blackwood, and Barzal.

Not like the gold medal team the year prior that had a pretty stacked roster.

You really don’t think this was mutual and how Maurice likely wanted it done? At the very least they allowed him to walk out on his own terms without having to show him the door. Being fired from your job can be pretty humiliating, they just found a way to avoid that for a man they clearly respect.
Agreed, I'm curious why some can't see professionalism even when it is clearly shown to them.

Agreed, we didn't have an amazingly talented team that year and I thought they gave Finland everything they could handle in that QF.

Ultimately it's gold or bust for most in this country but I don't think that roster underachived outside of not taking home the Bronze. Finland was the best team that year and deserved to win.

As much as I wanted to see some change, I do have to say I have enjoyed what Maurice has brought to the organization, and it seems like he has been a quality person throughout his time here. It's just too bad it didn't seem like he was going to take this team any further.
Yup, I appreciate Maurice's strengths, and he brought a level of respectability and professionalism, but it was time to move on. Things were not going to improve anytime soon, so on a personal level I'm glad he'll be able to de-stress over the holidays and enjoy his family.

I wish him all the best, and I'd love to see him in a media/communications role in the future. (I think he'd make a stellar colour guy). He's super entertaining and has a tonne of stories.

Not a WPG fan and have no ax to grind one way or another but the guy always struck me as a class act. Nonetheless, he had to go. That lineup should be top of the league or close to it.
I think that's the general feeling of the fans. Love him as a person but feel it was time to move on - the roster is one of the best this team has ever had.

Yep. Even at the time it was regarded as a weaker team -- an honest view that ran into the usual heightened expectations.

Leah Hextall was just on Toth's show on CJOB...

She raised some tough points which are absolutely correct, correct for any business... not just the NHL...

She's a candidate to be an Assistant to a GM...

That lady gets it...
saw this

i agree. they were loyal to maurice to long, and maurice basically saw the ceiling of where he can take the team himself

It’s like Chevy Chippy are to scared to fire
Not sure how Huddy is still around
Anyone know why Kompon is back in town?
I’m sure everyone in coaching staff is walking on eggshells right now
