Speculation: Patrik Laine

Jets would, if I was them, take Laine if the Habs paid us to take him enough of a pick or a prospect, but I wouldn’t pay anything for Laine or resign him, in the end I wouldn’t want him on the team past this season. Jets have lots of cap space, don’t need retention either. Habs don’t need to trade him, it’s only if they want to free up the money or more so cap space or a roster spot.

Capwages has them as being over the cap with Laine, so I'd assume so.

Depends on what deals are available and what it would cost to move him. They don't need to move him.

Wonder if Dallas would take him if Seguin is ruled out for the playoffs. They'd have the room and they do love their Finns

I know he's not the same player anymore, but maybe he could fit in with Hintz and Robertson. I haven't really watched him play lately, so I don't even know what he's like now

I mean, obviously the Canadiens don't NEED to dump the Laine contract before the TDL, right?

Ostensibly, they are still on a "building" trajectory as opposed to an "all-in" contending trajectory? (Despite doing extremely well and perhaps being a little ahead of target).

But I don't see a reason to dump Laine at negative value. And he's DEFINITELY negative value to every other team in the league.

I think the Habs are just gonna have to sit this one out and let him expire/walk. Sucks a bit, but that's the real world scenario on this one. :dunno:

When has any rental cap dump returned a 1st?

Not really a precedent for it but there’s not really a precedent for a guy making 8.7 million either

Guys with a couple years left in the 5-6 range have been dumped for first rounders but that was in a flat cap. Thats not where we’re at now so I don’t think it’d cost much to dump him

In any case I don’t think they do it unless it’s part of a bigger trade. I think the East is somewhat open this year but I don’t see Montreal as a true contender yet, they can afford to let him expire

I don’t know why so many of us pretend like we are perfectly okay with keeping Laine when he is a cap dump.

He will likely require a 2nd or 3rd to dump which might be worth it if we can replace him with someone productive that adds value to our team.

Devils were supposedly ready to take on Laine if Panarin was traded to Montreal but that obviously all fell apart. Could see them still taking him because it’s Fitz and there probably aren’t many other options.

Odds are if Montreal dumps him then they're going to retain 50% on it, so it wouldn't be 8.7.

When was Panarin ever rumoured to Montreal? He didn't fit what Montreal needs and there's something going on among Gorton/Drury/Dolan where Montreal and NYR don't really want to talk to eachother.

I don't see why you attach a 1st to him when he's UFA after the season. Realistically, what type of upgrade on him are you going to find if he is coming back from an injury? And at what cost?

If he's not healthy, he just becomes LTIR, right? Am I missing something?

Fans think their team will get a really good asset while taking on zero long term risk with zero downsides.

His bonus was paid, so he only has about 2.150 left in actual salary to be paid. Montreal has plenty of worthwhile assets if they decide to move on. I don't think it will cost the equivalent to a 1st... maybe a 2nd ish.

Laine is a "really good asset"... are you sure?

I do agree that the Habs could dump his money to another team if the Habs paid a little to do so. But literally nobody out there WANTS Laine, right? You understand that? :dunno:

No one, myself included, has called Laine a "really good asset" or anything other than a cap dump.

The "really good asset" is the 1st or 2nd fans want their team to get for taking on an expiring salary for two months.

Flames could take him quite easily with or without sending someone like Kadri back.

If just Laine, send a 1st with him.
Laine + first for Calgary's 2nd. How many draft picks is that drop? I think that would likely be too rich for the habs given the difference in value from liek the 20th OA to 35ish.
