Given the proximity of the Laine and McGoarty trades, it would be safe to assume KH was in on him as well. Would you rather have Mcgroarty or Laine?

McGroarty is younger but, in terms of upside, they do not even belong in the same discussion.

We drafted Demidov this summer and we have Slafkovsky and Caufield who are developing extremely well.
Laine also came here as a cap dump and with an heavy baggage.
But man, via trade/UFA, it is the biggest acquisition of this franchise since Kovalev. If Laine can find his mojo back and mainly consistency, i think we fail to grasp how big of a superstar we are getting our hands on.
We signed the best contract july 1. We drafted Demidov. We acquired Laine.
What an incredible summer. I think it is the best offseason of my lifetime as a Habs Fan.

Second most interesting man in the world.
I think only a microscopic portion of this community is in denial about what Laine brings, though there is no shortage of trolls to taunt us about salary or his recent injury woes (don't feed them!). He will be motivated and fit. Hopefully his shoulder tribulations are behind him.
If so, and if Dach is also fully recovered, that new second line transforms the team. With Demidov, Hage and several mobile defensemen also coming in soon, and a steady stream of high picks on the way, they are just expressing their annoyance at what they see coming up quickly on their rear-view mirror and the relative shortcomings of their GMs compared the wizard stirring our cauldron.

I’m getting ahead of myself here, no one can tell me not to…
IF Laine becomes his old self, PPG, 40+ goals, I’m hoping that Kent extends him longterm.
As much as I like Caufield, Laine is a bigger, better version of him, and I’m ready to trade Cole and move that salary to our new Viking overlord
But this is just me pondering the longterm . I will enjoy having both on the team for the foreseeable future

If Laine rebounds and Dach stays healthy?? The opposition is going to have to stop 2 f***ing 1st lines for all intents and purposes. FANTASTIC! I'm getting the season pass for TV this year!

It really all depends on what Laine will resign for. If it's manageable, Habs can afford to keep both. Let's just say the trend continues and pretty much all of their stars sign team friendly deals. Sure you won't be able to keep a lot of them past their initial post ELC contract but it's completely doable with the cap going up and Suzuki as a benchmark until demidov signs
It's been since the 93 Cup team that this team has possessed so much skill up front.

I want him to extend long term and keep Caufield. Gives us 35 minutes a game of elite sniper on the ice. A top 6 of
Laine - Suzuki - Slaf
Caufield - Dach - Demidov
Is elite if Laine can get back to anything close to his old ways. Even if he just ends up a 35 - 35 kind of guy we'd essentially have 2 1st lines.

I don't see any connection at all between McGroarty and Laine. Two entirely different assets acquired by moving two entirely different assets.

Happy with this unexpected, but fortunate move. Could be career-defining for Patrik.
I'd keep expectations on hold for most ridiculous numbers, but it is clear that Patrik should be at least utilized as PP force multiplier: it is hardly secret to anyone that when that cannon appear anywhere near his traditional office, an opponents tend to cheat toward him, sometimes even with 2 or 3 players, but always at least with one dedicated for the job. Only his presence there make more room for others regardless of do he get a puck or make a shot or not.
Hoping reasonably sheltered role and minutes for Patrik, and possibility to use his main weapon a lot. At least first as designated PP specialist, possibly doubling in both PP1 and PP2. Kind of embracing that age old "one-trick pony" metaphora, knowing it is not entirely true, but for that One trick certainly effective way to get started. I would give Patrik a lot of responsibility in re-organizing Habs powerplay, from shooting drills to actual tactical schemes...
And hey, everyone should just end idiotic experiments, desires, and fantasies concerning vision of "Patrik the center", it's waste of resources. Just pass the puck!

It is one explanation for why they only recently became interested in Laine. Could have been looking at players with cheaper contracts and got no takers for the assets they were offering.
