LeBrun: Patrik Laine wants a fresh start and trade out of Columbus

He has 2 years left, right? What would the price be for Laine with no retention? Ducks are looking for RW, Verbeek may inquire if he doesn't get his primary target (whoever that might be).

Correct, but his current form is an absolute unknown
That's an inherent risk for any team acquiring a new player.

If I'm Don Waddell - I make him available for a return that matches his value on paper. If no offers match that, then I tell Laine that we tried but unfortunately didn't get enough of an offer.

Waddell was part of the process in perceived underpayments in Carolina:

Skinner for Pu and draft picks (turned into Kochetkov and Nikishin lol)
de Haan for an AHL goalie (Forsberg) and a depth defensemen (Forsling)
Nedeljkovic for a 3rd

Yeah but idk who is taking him without retention rn.

I was joking about a Necas for Laine trade as being way too stereotypical, but it's true that disgruntled player swaps have a long history in this league. If Columbus is willing to retain some and give a prospect to balance out the value, I can see the workings of something that has some legs.

Didn't he want out of Winnipeg too, or was it the Jets who wanted him out?

Pretty bummed about this. Thought Columbus would be an ideal situation for him, but there could be more to it than we know.

I feel like it’ll be another “hockey trade” for a guy in a similar boat. I’d like for Columbus to shed some NHL bodies but that’s easier said than done.
