Actually the beard might be in a big role in the future cup win. Most Patrik Laine fans ans insiders will concur on the fact that Patty was his absolute best goal scoring version of himself when he rocked the beard (these are actual real pictures of Laine):

If he is scoring this much only with the moustache.. then imagine what he could do with both moustache AND beard??

Love that the team is winning! Dach's getting better which should help Laine getting a goal on 5v5 soon.

I do, however, have to admit that I'm having some Laine bomb withdrawals after a week without his goal Anybody else?

A lot to do with only having 3 powerplays in last 2 games. Yesterday he was very close to burying his first powerplay chance in the late second period. There was no replays or slowmos of that shot, but I think it hit the end shaft of the stick by Tampa goalie. Absolutely wicked onetimer from far away again.

Back to back games he made a key early cycle play in the O zone, at ES, to create an important goal. His vision and passing is pretty high end, finds guys cross ice regularly. Also a bit surprised at his defensive awareness - won’t be winning Selke’s but gets back early and is not a goal suck in any way.

Still expecting him to break our hearts, but damn, what a package.

The Columbus experience did improve Laine as an overall player, he started putting way more effort into defense and didn't want to be called out on being lazy in his own zone. He also started to amass more points through playmaking rather than finishing plays.

With his reach and long stick he can intercept plays in an unexpected way, and he's pretty fast skating back when he reaches his top speed, it's just the first couple of steps that are on the slower side.

Main problem for him is that he tends to gas out pretty badly when the team gets stuck on their own zone, especially now that he has been inactive, and has problems clearing out the puck when that happens.

So far he's been the one who creates the chances for teammates 5 on 5, not the one who gets the chances. Now that Dach and Newhook look like they are starting to find their game, maybe that will open up more chances for Laine as well 5 on 5.

I've been preaching this for years, his defensive reputation is just wrong and comes from stat watchers. He's in no way worse defensively than most wingers in the game, but the legend of bad defense has lived on. Finally he's on a market where that myth can't survive because people get to see the reality more.
