One of the cool things about the Laine contract is that the deal expires around the time we'd likely be looking to add a piece from free agency.

Like Hughes said last summer, we weren't really in a position to be offering competitive long term deals in the UFA market because of our position in a rebuild, which also relates to the maturity of our core.

In a couple years when Laine needs a new contract, we'll have already auditioned him and our core will have matured more. If he's a good fit, we have a good chance to keep him long term.

If anyone is hurting the line it's Slaf, plays die on his stick.
They are all hurting it. 2 guys out of form with very little confidence, and while Patty looks like his old self again, he is still way too rusty to drive any line.

Coach gets crap for keeping them together, but I can definitely see how Dach and Slaf could benefit from playing with Laine as he builds his form back game by game

Hope KH resigns him

Might be awkward for them to bring up Beck to help out Laine with no injuries. Bottom 6 guys are mostly playing well and benching Dach seems extreme, needs ice.

Hey Laine we don't mind losing 5-4 , stop winning us games. Thx

After the injury in Columbus, he always looked horrible, except for the first game, he improved his play after about 5 games. Now he looks good, of course you can see that he hasn't played in a literal sense for a very long time and also hasn't practiced on th ice too much too. But he really need a player like Jenner on the center and not Dach.

Martin St. Louis wants so that he improved this line. I think it will be better soon, maybe already in the game against Anaheim.

Dach drags that line down but I can see the reasoning for playing him on that line.

1. The hope is to get him going and playing to his level after a long absence
2. It’s a heavy line and the rest of the squad are playing in the right positions/lines

It will take some, if not a lot of time. IMO it would be better to try other options at center on that line, from a team success point of view. Let Dach cook on the third line until he’s up to speed.

Playing as well as could be expected after a year off. There’s something about his interviews though - still kinda seems aloof/non-chalant/not happy despite his remarks

I haven't seen the recent interviews but he's always been kinda aloof in interviews with lots of (often self-deprecating) dry humor with dead pan delivery, I think it's just his way of dealing with the media. I wouldn't read too much into it as long as his body language on the ice looks good.

I can't imagine he's too happy with his overall game right now, almost a year without playing and coming back from a nasty knee injury, it would be a miracle if he was feeling at his best out there. It's great he's scoring some goals though and his shot is looking good, if he can keep that up I'm sure it'll help him get through it.

He'll be fine, he just needs to keep playing and he'll get back to top-form. You can't fast-forward that unfortunately.

I feel a lot of people would feel awkward/uncomfortable with a camera and spotlights pointing at their faces and someone they don't know asking them the same dumb questions over and over and over.

From what i've seen he seems happy to play and be in that locker room.

Players and coaches go out to win every game, it's how it needs to be. It gets interesting for our GM if we are fighting for a play off spot. Can't remember if it was the Flyers or Rags some years ago were hanging on to a play off spot but decided to sell assets off as they didn't see the sense in just making the post season.

Right now I think players that are UFA and Hughes doesn't see in our longer term plans should get moved. Armia, Dvo and Pezz

First of all i love how Montreal crowd is showing support to Laine, i've followed his career since he was playing in Liiga and he has a tendency to show some attitude when things doesn't go his way. But he thrives under big spotlight, and it really helps that he's getting love from the people in Montreal.

I've had some issues with him before, but i think this could be a turning point for him. He even said that after all he went through, everything else is a bonus. So this might've opened some locks in his mind to enjoy the game even when things doesn't go his way.

I've watched all his games, and i'm a bit worried with his line. Slafkovsky is a big guy and his skating is so heavy that he get's gassed too easily. Dach isn't very impressive either. Laine has that honeymoon phase now, but before he got really frustrated if his linemates can't feed him or finish from his passes. But like i said, he seems much more mature now and crowd support will help him a lot.

Laine is the type of player who was born to play in Montreal. There is literally no place on earth that loves talent more than Montreal. He will be a god here.

I agree with his linemates but two things there, we have to be patient with Dach, he is coming back a big big injury and these things take time. Slafkovsky might not be the best linemate to play with him I agree with you but Laine just has to be a little patient, he will be playing with a God before end of season (Demidov).

I keep seeing people say to sign him soon. As far as I know, he has one more year of contract after this one
yes he does. but this summer KH should extend him past 2025/26

He can't since he's not a UFA yet, unless there's a new rule I don't know about. I think it's sometime after January or something like that.
