Player Discussion Patrik Laine: Part 2 - Healthy Living Edition

This is the way

I would love to keep him for our PP, but people pretending he’s a good 5v5 player and capable of playing top 6 minutes are lying

This is complete BS! He is still skating on one leg!!

He has noit played as single shifft with a bonafide top 6 center after being traded from Winnipeg!!

He has not played or trained enough due to his depression and knee injury, you have not seem him in shape and healthy with proper support!

Did you watch him play in Winnipeg?!

Give him a full offseason and a legit top 6 center and a good forechecker winger and you will have 40 goals.

Yeah man he just needs another leg, no mental health issues, a fully upgraded second line, a full offseason, etc

The excuses literally never end with this guy lmfao

If we are losing Laine, Hutson would have loose 10-15 assists. No way Anderson or Gallagher would have put the puck in the net like Laine does. You need that kind of guy wich win a game by himself even if the entire team play badly. Sometimes he is gonna be quiet, but the rest of the team will take the control. If we are to lose Laine, we gonna take a big step back.
Hutson sits at 54 assists with 9 games remaining. He's got 9 assists in his previous 9 games. The record for most assists by a defenseman is 60, so 7 more assists and he's got it. With 10 more assists Hutson would be 3rd all time in assists for rookies overall and with 17 assists in his final 9 games he would hold the all time record.
Forget the playoffs, put Laine with Hutson for 25 minutes each game that's left and see if he can break the rookie record for assists. There's always playoffs next year and the year after that, but there's only one shot for Hutson at rookie records.

To prove my point..

Boone Jenner

Jack Roslovic

Kirby Dach

Alex Newhook

Jake Evans

Yes, Laine sucks att forchecking and braking up plays in his own zone but he is among the best ever at shooting the pill, so just sorround him with players that complement him and enjoy the show.

Nick Suzuki - 232 ES points in 446 games (0.52 ES PPG)
Cole Caufield - 152 ES points in 278 games (0.55 ES PPG)

Patrik "Not a Top 6 Forward" Laine - 278 ES points in 420 games (0.66 ES PPG)

The thing is,
1) we're talking about post injuries Laine. So the stats from the past may or may not be relevant.
2) you have to put up points AND be responsible defensively to be a quality top 6 player.

Dont think saying he plays with Newhook and Roy is an excuse. Take any 30 goals winger and put them with Newhook and Roy and they will struggle to score 20 goals. A state of fact is not an excuse.

Weird how every other winger on the team out produces him ES with less time and worse linemates.

Laine has had injuries since first season concussion. So pretty much all of these stats are between injuries Laine that took some time to get going each time, He's still far more effective.

Oh well, then the team has 1 quality top 6 player (Nick)

To be fair he plays with 3rd line players ...
It's not just his linemates. He was playing really poorly when he came back. He's improving though (as you'd expect) and I think next year we'll know what we've really got at 5 on 5.

Even if he does nothing there though he's been so good on the PP that it doesn't really matter.

Worse linemates? Based on what?

Dach and Newhook were the worst in minuses league wide before Laine ever came into it.

There were no worse linemates in MTL, or in the league, statistically.

Which worse linemates??

I don't dislike Newhook but you must not watch the game if you think there's significanly worse player than him in our lineup beside Pazetta and Roy. He's young and i think he can figure it out but he's struggling big time this season.

Roy is out pacing him as well playing with apparently the worse player to exist newhook. How does AHL Roy out produce super Star Golden god Laine?

It's not but it doesn't help at all. He's 21st in the league in the goal per game category (40 games min). The idea that some people think he loses all his goal scoring touch at 5 on 5 and would not be able to finish the chances a legit top 6 center would give him just because it would be at 5 on 5 is quite laughable to me. It's like a switch. Oh it's 5 on 5 me dumb Patrick Laine wont score even if this legit center pass me the puck. Oh now it's PP bit bit bit robot Patrick Laine will put his scoring machine switch back to on.

I watched Newhook in Avalanche and he brings the same thing here. Lots of good skating, some nice finishes, a lot of missed chances. He does not create much chances for his linemates really, he's the one getting the chances with rushes. I'm not expecting like a huge growth spurt in abilities, because the main issue for that player type is hockey IQ, vision.

When he came back his numbers were among the worst in the league. That just confirmed the eye test. He was giving away pucks and pretty much useless. He's improved a lot and you're starting to see his game coming back. Yeah, his linemates aren't great but he was really bad before Four Nations.

Like I said, next year we'll have a much better idea of the kind of player he really is. In the meantime he can keep rifling pucks on the PP.
