Laine — clearly wearing a decorative knee brace because he’s just an evil lazy bastard — is outproducing Slafkvosky.

HFBoards is right to laser focus all their anger and frustration onto Laine, he is simply an evil lazy bastard. Unlike darling angels Newhook, Dach, and Slafkovsky who simply are on the verge of greatness and shouldn’t be criticised for anything ever.

If only Hutson didn’t have a breakout rookie season, we would be lower in the standings too.

I think you're right, and I'd like to offer a theory.

First -- what you're right about. Many here seem to be applying a much higher standard to Laine than they are up Dach, Slaf, and Newhook. The realities are that Laine is producing more, was acquired at the lowest cost of the four (by far), and is the most criticized.

Why is that?

I think it's because of the implied consequences. The team invested very little in Laine, so in a way it doesn't matter if he fails. It implies nothing of the sacrifice of Jordan Harris doesn't pan out.

Whereas the team invested a 1st overall in Slaf, so it would be such a catastrophic failure if he became a 50-point forward that people are not willing to contemplate it.

It's actually good to see him slimmed down. But hopefully he does train hard in the offseason.

Dach has told Engels repeatedly he looks forward to this upcoming offseason, after losing last offseason, to really train hard, and work on his fitness. Easy to say that. Let's see if he does it.
Dach had every opportunity to work hard last offseason, he said himself he didn't take it seriously though

People were saying Dach would have came back at the end of last season if the Habs were in the playoff race

The proof will be in the pudding next fall.

Both Dach and Laine have an injury and time off excuse and I'm all for them getting the benefit of the doubt, decisions don't need to be made on either player until next year and neither are currently blocking anybody more worthy from spots in the line-up.

Having Both Dach and Laine come close to their potential is very important for the club.

I will just draw the line at people trying to excuse Laine's poor play on his linemates when it's just him not having the oomph, timing or full health/conditioning to be particularly effective.

His legs used to look pretty normal for a hockey player. I think we can see the result of all those knee injuries.

Give me a break. It's been 5 months and 50+ games

Both guys, hopefully, will have a full offseason of training and come to camp at full strength. As you say, if they don't perform after that, then changes need to be made.

Doesn't mean we don't shop or add during the summer, there's just no need to become trigger happy just because.

I would send both Dach and Laine to Buffalo for Cozens. But Buffalo will say FU. I really don't understand people who still want Dach, Laine or Newhook on the habs lineup going forward.

You can't expect Laine to have the acceleration of Hutson etc if he has a different muscle type that doesn't allow it.
Also, muscle types don't take conditioning as fast, Raimo Summanen was talking about this, see the article, find the section on musculature, see down:

It may take even longer for Laine to get the full impact.

- Laine's situation is quite sensitive. Because Laine has had this cocktail [of injuries and mental health problems], the limit in this case could be as much as six months before he can start to be required in full. But the injury history is quite extensive," Summanen says.

- Physiologically, we are talking about surprisingly long periods of time for the nervous system, physical fitness and timing to click properly.

Patrik Laine has played an average of 17 minutes in three games.

Summanen also points to the conditions. While Laine was on the dock for a long time, the top players in the league have been playing healthy and the bar has been rising with them.

MAINOS ENDS
- What people don't necessarily realise is that the top has escaped to a new level. Even if Laine reaches his best level, the front runners will always be ahead of him. This is something to keep in mind.

According to Summasen, the situation now is that Laine cannot even be compared to his own maximum.

- An explosive player can reach peak fitness faster. With a bigger guy like Laine, it takes more time. If Laine comes through this and is able to get to his best level, that's a really big deal. It's going to take a hell of a lot of work.

--------------

So when you will criticize Laine (and not only him), always keep this in mind.
