Value of: Patrik Laine 50% retained

Montreal doesn't need to retain the salary. Any bottom team that wants to sell more tickets, has a spot open on PP1 and needs goal scoring. I'd trade him for ahl top 6.

Whether it's the knee he chose not to get surgically repaired in the fall, or systemic issues between the ears, there's no reason to incentivize another club to take him. He's got a year left and they're not financially pressed to get rid of him.
Yup. Bury this guy in the minors. Keep him away from the room. Bad news,

Montreal can just waive him if they are that concerned about the “culture.”
If they're really concerned about their sacro-saint culture, they can always buy him out. Buy hey, I don't think anyone worries more about a 1 year gamble than some genZers pulling another chillax act at camp.

Yeah inconceivable for it to happen considering it literally happened the last time he was traded. The Jackets added a 2nd with Laine to get rid of him. He's been benched since then. His value is not higher than it was last offseason. You're calling others clueless?
Well, keep in mind he had 2 years left then, now he has one. And while Jordan Harris isn't a household name, he's an ok young D, so part of the value of the 2nd round pick was for Harris.

I'd be ok retaining on Laine to move him for future considerations.

I would take him on the Flyers no retention in a swap for Ristolainen. Lower cap hit for the Habs albeit for one more year. Could be needed to replace Savard. Flyers have been last place on the powerplay over the last 7 seasons and is at a putrid 14% over the last 3.

Let him (hopefully) rehab his knee and get in shape this summer. Not much risk to having him start the season with the Habs. They need scoring. That said the power play looked ten times better without him in the playoffs. So much more moving parts and better puck movement when it's not just the same plan each time. If he doesn't have a good first few months, waive him or try to trade him.

Afaik, he was working pretty hard last summer and was looking in fine shape at camp. His play on the ice when we got hit in the knee again wasn't lack of work. He's just not entirely a NHLer at 5 vs 5 and that shows a lot. He reacts too slowly and has issues following the play.

interesting. Not totally against that deal, especially when habs fans want to buy Lainie out at 4.0 this year and 2.5 next. We'd be getting risto at 1.5/3 m essentially

Think he finishes the contract with the Habs. If Ovechkin retires after next year he could fill a role in Washington and maybe help rebuild his value. Caps have done well with that lately.

Had Laine fallen off so much he will be a PTO guy come trading camps 2026?
If I was a rebuilding team looking for McKenna & co. I'd give Laine 2x3 or something, his flaws don't really matter when you're not serious about winning now and he'll sell more tickets than ordinary plugs.

Risto >>>> Laine as a player, it just comes down to the term, and if you’re prepared to have Rasmus for 3 more years

That said, I’d still take Risto to Columbus over Laine for a year

What role ? The guy has had personality and performance issues on every team he’s been on. What kind of a dumb GM would want him? I doubt Laine will be seeking league minimum contracts
