Value of: Patrik Laine 50% retained

Oh god, how many Paul Byron for _____ (insert Islanders player) did we get during that timeframe? Then again we had a small group of people who thought Mike Hoffman to the Isles was a good idea while failing to remember he’s completely inept as a hockey player away from the puck in the offensive zone (just like Walterson).
What's this Paul Byron slander?!?! Guy was certainly not a top6 player but he left everything on the ice and had a tendency to perform really well in the clutch. I'd take another one on the Habs anyday.

Edit: Scratch that we got Newhook already lol.

HABS should be looking to Anaheim to find their 2C -
They have the pieces (Mallioux, Beck, Reinbacher, and 2 firsts in 2025) to land MacTavish or Zegras.

Moving Laine to free up $ and give the young ones the prime spots on the PP and top 6.
  1. Caufield - Suzuki - Slaf
  2. Newhook - MacTavish - Demidov
  3. Gallagher - Dach - Anderson
with Beck, Kapanen, and Roy waiting to take a spot.

Isles would be interested, but maybe they take on Duclair and eat 25 % of the contract
or
JGP + Duclair
for Laine + Newhook

Ducks are so loaded though that those pieces aren't going to be interesting to them. They wouldn't move McTavish for any combination of that.

Zegras, I'll give you, would be a very good 2C target for Montreal.

Would probably be better to try get a 2C to play with him? Kinda hard to score if you play with "C" Newhook, who has a staggering 11 assists in 82 games. His playmaking ability is absolutely horrid.

Lamoriello for Youppi, who says no
Deal, no take backs. Montreal now requires all players to shave. Gallagher has to shave that patchy chin beard thing and Lane Hutson will finally buy his first adult razor (which he won’t need to use for 10 years since he can’t grow facial hair).

Landing MacTavish would take a lot, most likely more than the Canadiens would be willing to trade. I'm not crazy about Zegras, but Logan Mailloux and the lesser of the 2025 first-rounders would be OK.

I think the Isles would be interested in your trade proposal, but I can't see any interest from Montreal. JPG would be a pretty mediocre 2C and Duclair is of no interest.

awful for the Habs

I don't think Montreal is at a point where they would just trade Laine. They need more forward depth, not less.

Based on insider reporting, it sounds like Montreal doesn't see Zegras as a C. I also don't think they'd give up what the Ducks would ask for at this point in time.

Montreal needs a C that can play a two way game, Zegras doesn't and isn't a good C target. He made sense as a W target which is why Montreal was discussing a trade at last draft, but that interest reportedly ended when Demidov fell to them.

I can see the fit for Pageau if Dvorak walks and Montreal wants to let their young C prospects marinate in Laval, but I think they'd much rather have Laine and Newhook over Pageau and Duclair next season and going forward.

You’ve misunderstood. Lou will be replacing Youppi as the Habs’ official team mascot; he will have no executive power.

Also, Youppi is now your GM and President of Hockey Operations.

That’s a technical foul

Montreal record when Laine returned is 30-13-6. While he was out injured our record was 10-18-5.

You sure you still want to trade him?
Montreal shots for with Laine on the ice : 197
Montreal shots against with Laine on the ice: 272

Montreal expected goals for with Laine on the ice: 19,59
Montreal expected goals against with Laine on the ice: 28,36

Montreal PP% before Laine: 20,8%
Montreal PP% at the end of the season: 20,9%.

Correlation does not equal causation. You're supposed to learn this at elementary school.
