Sounds about right. You'll need to add a first round pick to get rid of Laine.
Take the picks and put Laine on waivers and send him to the A?No thanks. Not the kind of veteran I'd want in the Sharks locker room
Maybe the Hawks or San Jose? Those teams could take his full contract and would be happy with the picks the Habs add. Not too sure if either team has the second line centre the OP hopes for though?
Buyout is quite friendly, no need to dump him. And the Habs have a lot of cap space, I don t think it comes down to this.Sounds about right. You'll need to add a first round pick to get rid of Laine.
I don’t blame him for that either. Outside of his shot, it’s like playing on the PK all shift. Even Ovi is substantially better defensively and he usually has the broken controller syndrome. And it seems like MSL doesn’t was a guy with those “massive flaws” playing with his elite, young players. IMO Laine is at a point with the Habs where he’s got to go. The club is too good to keep him.
Not at 8m a year with the players who still need to be signed. Romanov/Dobson/Holmstrom/Tsyplakov all RFA and unsigned. I’d rather sign those 4 than 1 year of an expensive Oliver Wahlstrom with a better shot.Islanders should be all over this. They’re desperate for scoring and with one year left, retention can probably be had.
Im not a huge laine fan but he can help a PP and a team desperately in need of someone who can be a trigger man.

Montreal still has a retention spot available for this year, so they can easily deal him before the draft with retention of 50% if that is what it takes. i expect a second retention spot will be used for Price once his bonuses are paid on July 1. Even with those two, they would have an additional retention spot, depending on how next season goes, for a Gallagher or Anderson. No need to lose assets to unload him, just a taker.Still need to find a taker for Laine and most teams really don’t want an $8m deadweight contract outside of ones struggling to reach the cap floor.
No one wants him at full cap it, even if it’s for one season. Thats essentially $8m on a guy who’s basically dead weight away from the puck. There’s not many teams who would touch that unless they’re below/ at the cap floor and need a salary to get them over that spot. The easiest way to move him would be to retain, take back another high salary expiring player or buy out. Moving him and getting back no cap hit in return would be almost impossible from atleast 90% of the league.Montreal still has a retention spot available for this year, so they can easily deal him before the draft with retention of 50% if that is what it takes. i expect a second retention spot will be used for Price once his bonuses are paid on July 1. Well, it would depend on how 'sure' of a 2C you would want. If you want a 'sure' 2C then yes, you'll need to add.I'm pleasantly surprised this thread resulted in some earnest replies since it probably is wishful thinking on my part.
I admit it would probably require maybe the addition of another pick (Montreal also has two 2nd rounders and three in the 3rd in 2025, so lots to play with) and maybe more than one prospect .I do wonder though if certain teams would take the risk, his contract does have only one year left.
Which is why I mentioned retention. He’s far better than Wahlstrom but I get the comparison. Laine at 4m and asking Duclair to waive his clause could work. Not at 8m a year with the players who still need to be signed. Romanov/Dobson/Holmstrom/Tsyplakov all RFA and unsigned. Habs powerplay is worst with him. He gets an occasional highlight reel goal because his shot looks like a lazer when he hits it. Half the time he whiff it and the rest of the time he cough up the puck or make a bad pass.Islanders should be all over this. They’re desperate for scoring and with one year left, retention can probably be had.

Duclair for Laine I’d do since It’ll get them out of the Duclair contract and at the deadline/next summer Laine can pack up his act and move onto the next location with a good Fortnite server. I doubt the Habs would touch that though.Which is why I mentioned retention. He’s far better than Wahlstrom but I get the comparison. Laine at 4m and asking Duclair to waive his clause could work.
Laine did well at centre in a brief stint too. I’d give him another shot at if I was the coach and lacking up the middle.
Oh definitely that we Can agree about. For me 2C price is around what Nelson/Horvat got at TDL, i.e. adding Laine makes it so much more expenzive. No I agree. It was a tongue in cheek remark to the idea that ithe package could net a 2C.
Instead, he's your username. The saddest part about the Laine saga is that if he played at his hardest (training too so he was in his best condition) he’d be adored in Montreal. IMO there’s no better hockey market than Montreal for recognizing effort and sacrifice, especially when it’s coming from the most talented players. If Laine is traded (I think it’s inevitable) the cost will be retention and picks. Then the return could be the second line centre the OP is hoping for.
You'd have to add a hell of a sweetener to land a youngish top 4 defenseman or top 6 center to the first just to add that calibre player... nevermind getting the other team to take on Laine's contract which still pays him 9.1m in actual dollars.I kinda feel like after last night's game, and some of the comments from Habs players saying they won because there were no passengers, that Laine's stint as a Hab may be short and sweet,
Which teams might be willing to take a 1 year cap dump in Laine to also get a 16th or 17th overall, namely for a 2nd line centre or top 4 RHD? Preferably someone between the ages 26-30 and over 6 ft.
Montreal could (and would have to) sweeten the pot with one of our many good but kinda redundant prospects (Kapanen/Beck/Mailloux/Mesar/Farrel/Tuch/Engstrom/Primeau etc...)
In previous years I would've suggested something with Arizona/Utah, but those days are seemingly over and I can't think of another team that's clearly cap-dump central. Maybe Seattle or NYI? I'd say Chicago but the only pieces that Montreal would want from there aren't available. Pittsburgh should go this route but won't be with Dubas.
What exactly are you hoping to get in a 2C in terms of production, age, and all-around play?I'm pleasantly surprised this thread resulted in some earnest replies since it probably is wishful thinking on my part.
