Sell high? If anything him playing on a horrendous team in Seattle (although now he has been traded), and not getting as much ice time as he deserved at the WJC suggest that he isn't at an evident developmental high at this time. Selling high on him would be trading him after a deep playoff run with Calgary or if he gets hot for a stretch with his new team.

All that said, I think he is the Canucks' second best D prospect after Willander and would like to see him at least get a year in Abbotsford before the Canucks decide what to do with him.

Though in response to the question about the offseason, the comment saying they worked with the coaching staff to figure out what to prioritize felt a bit like throwing them under the bus for the bad signings / defence construction.

Every time he mentions the coach it's always about "playing the right way". It reminds me far too much of the praise Benning used to give Green.

Most interesting thing to me about this news conference from a "Hockey Futures' standpoint, is that Allvin said they 'zero interest' in trading their top prospects.

He then listed Wilander, Lekkerimaki, Mynio and Kudryavtsev. He said the feeling of management is that they will all be NHL players one day.

Interesting that he mentions Kudryavtsev. A few posts on these boards intimated that the Canuck head office was less than enthralled with him, and that he might be included in any trade.

Name dropping these defensive prospects is probably half giving them confidence in their play, and half posturing to keep their value up for other teams. All of them except Kudryatsev are probably better bets to hit than Fernstrom.

Also, if they lock up M Pettersson realistically there’s only space for one of E Pettersson, Kudryatsev, and Mynio on this roster in the next 4-5 years. Have to assume E Pettersson has a leg up and that they end up trading at least one.

He’s not going to get much, if any, playing time with the Nucks. He’s just not going to supplant anyone.

And the more time goes by, prospects become less and less, the new shiny toy as they are replaced by other new shiny toys.

So if teams were asking, I think they should listen.

In addition, depth is nice but it should also be used to strengthen other areas. Between the current dmen on the Nucks,Willander, EP2, Mynio and Kud, that’s too many players for not enough spots.

Use one or two to strengthen upfront where you are severely lacking.

Personally, I think trading the Rags 1st might bite them in the ass. Especially if someone like Kud or Kud+ could have got the deal done.

Then there’s the obsession with playing Juulsen and VD. Everyone’s praising the MP trade because we finally got rid of VD, as if it was the only way to keep him away from the line up.

Possibly. But both Wilander and Kudryavtsev are right-shot defenders. Finding young, right-shot defenders, who can actually play at the NHL-level and generate offense, are as rare as Picasso's.

And I really doubt Allvin would be tempted to include either one of them for a strict TDL rental. So it's really going to have to be something good, with a similar young talent on ELC's coming back in any deal.

Issue is I don’t think he will be pushing for a spot on the Nucks because of competition and depth both in Van and Abby.

It’s a good sign Kud has come in to Abby and leads the team in d scoring while by all accounts is more than serviceable in his own end, all in his rookie year. I honestly can’t remember the last dman drafted by the Canucks that managed to do anything close to similar. Bieksa maybe?

For years we’d draft what looked to be somewhat capable defenders only to see them fall apart the minute they stepped foot into the AHL.

I think there’s some trauma for Canucks fans (deservedly). It feels like there’s a lot of waiting for the other shoe to drop especially on all of these d prospects that look promising and the reflexive reaction is to get rid of them before they inevitably fall apart.

Allvin said at his presser that Elias Pettersson II won't be heading to the AHL-star game and skills competition. They're keeping him in Vancouver for the time being.

Interesting development. I would have thought with Marcus Pettersson coming in from Pittsburgh, that D-Petey would be farmed out and heading to the all-star game at Palm Desert, home of the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

But apparently Ty Mueller is now going in his place.

Based on Tocchet's post game interview yesterday, where he looked absolutely pissed that Miller had been traded, and called him the "heart and soul" of the team, it's possible that Tocchet had asked management not to trade Miller and they did so anyway.

And this is Allvin's way of trying to get back into his good books.

You don’t trade young players with promise because in 4-5 years there might not be space for them. For one thing, very rarely has a NHL team had too many good prospects they didn’t know what to do with. Second, not all those players will hit but if they are improving you keep them around (pending roster build goals…ie. adding for a run). The time to deal is when the youngster is knocking on the door. Then you evaluate if you move the veteran or the younger guy. Essentially too many prospects is never an issue.

As we all know now, things could change rather quickly here. I can see Tocchet not being renewed and a new coach brought in.

That doesn't sound like it would be team driven given the way they've showered praise on him.

And, imo, rightfully so. Tocchet's shown this season he's not perfect but it's not on him.
