NYI need to retool, and while I'm not as pessimistic about the state of the franchise as many other NYI fans, I really do not think Roy is a good fit for what is likely to be a couple years of retooling. NYI's defensemen that I've watched for years under other coaches are playing erratically under Roy especially lately, so my theory is that his personality is getting to them. Adam Pelech is playing like he did as a rookie. It's bizarre. They need to settle down. I don't see why NYI should be so attached to Roy as to work it out.
I also think that it's time to move on from LL, although I think some of his decision making has been unfairly criticized. The direction NYI take this offseason, and unlike in recent years NYI will have choices. They have some assets, and important decisions to make esp wrt RFA's Romanov, Dobson, and Holmstrom. But imo staying with Roy, something a younger LL would never have done, would imo be a signal that it's really time to move on from him.
What NYI absolutely *cannot* do is continue to be destroyed on special teams, and I do not see how this tandem fixes that. And I get that the PP will be a slower fix, but there's no reason they should continue to be so incredibly putrid on the PK.
This goaltending move just seemed like an unnecessary messing with some players' heads, which Hickey alluded to afterward. Not that I think Tristan Lennox is a future NHL goalie, but imo it's a really ***** thing to do to a person who just, in a very unlikely way, realized his dream of playing in the NHL. And imo if a really level headed guy like Hickey didn't like it I don't think any player would like it. Tbh, I rather think NYI need a coach with a personality like Hickey's than like Roy's.
Most NYI fans are likely to have a different opinion, because Jack Capuano looked and talked like a phys ed teacher from a new england suburb, but among recent NYI coaches I put him *above* Roy. Like Capuano, Roy isn't good with in game situations. But Capuano taught/managed well behind the scenes. Roy has fun press conferences.
