Value of: Patrick Maroon's next contract?

i hear one reason maroon has been consistent this year is he lost alot of weight in the off season... he deserves praise for this

but not everyone keeps in shape. if he gets a longterm deal that guarantees him 10+ million to retire on... what happens next?

some guys play hockey because they love hockey... they live breath and bleed hockey... other guys play it because they have talent and like the money

at nhl level they all have talent... but to succeed means playing through pain... sacraficing 24/7 to keep top shape... ptting out effort every shift

maybe maroon will do this but he didnt do it in the past. if i was in charge i would want to keep him motivated until he proves he deserves long term deal.

i am ok paying him what a 25 goal scorer makes... 3.5-4 mill seams fair... i just wouldnt go long term

This wasnt Maroon's contract year so he didnt get in shape just to get a big next contract. Both Maroon and Kassian were told what they have to work on if they want to be in the NHL long term and both seemingly got the message. Now that they have seen what makes them successful they would be shooting themselves in the foot if they went back to their old ways.

Maroon was guaranteed 4M over 2 yrs so couldve stayed out of shape and remained a 4th line winger.

The good thing is that he got into shape 2 years before being an UFA, so he didn't wait until the last season of his deal to put in the work and try to cash in. If he comes back next season in shape then hopefully that's a good indication of him remaining in shape for the duration of his career.

Yes.

The only thing he contributes is scoring. Not a great defensive player, he doesn't kill penalties, and he's not out there driving his own line. As soon as the scoring dries up, and you can bet that it eventually will, there's literally no role left for him on the team.

So yes, I would pay him like a one-dimensional, bottom-six forward. If he wants more $, he's more than welcome to go play somewhere else. I would much rather find myself looking for another skilled but under appreciated LW, than find myself saddled with an expensive and un-tradable contract.

Well, you will both not sign him at the number and are unlikely to find a suitable replacement for that number.

So good luck with that strategy, I guess.

He'll never be as good a player as when he plays with McDavid.

Let's say the Oilers can't/wouldn't go any higher than 4.75m a year.
Some other teams offers 5.5m a year and Maroon takes that offer.

Can he ever play up to a # 1 or 2 LWer without McDavid? And at that price he should.

I know Marchand signed before he UFA for 6.1m. Maybe he know he could not be as good and happy hockey player any where else except as a Bruin and Bergeron's LWer.

Maroon isn't that far off the numbers he posted playing with the Ducks either.

He's been a full time NHLer for 4 seasons now and has put up

29 points in 62 games
34 points in 71 games
27 points in 72 games
36 points in 70 games (so far)

Those 36 points are about what Duchene does with the Avs, and he commands 6m and according to reports wouldn't be traded for anything lower than starting forward, Dman and 1st rounder.

I'm being sarcastic. Just makes you wonder what a player's true value is.

Oilers have to be careful. Everyone is acknowledging his shortcomings but Maroon isn't in a position to moderate his contract too much. He's 29. This will be the only time he has to cash-in, even if it isn't with the Oilers.

Further, he is not without leverage. Pouliot has been underwhelming, Lucic has been pretty average. The Oilers don't have a ton of depth, and they need Either Maroon or a capable replacement at a fair price.

I think he'll get between 3.5-4.5 over 4 years. I think term will win him over.

he's a middle 6 forward, if he continues his play through next season i'm sure it will be 4-5 years @ 4mil ish give or take 500k

He is a good player without McDavid factor'd in but not good enough to command more than 4mil, McDavid supplies Maroon with tons of scoring opportunities that any other center wouldn't be doing.

I'm fine with this. I don't think the Oilers will have any trouble replacing him if he leaves.

Puljujarvi will likely be chomping at the bit to step onto McDavid's line by this time, so I dunno ... I mean if he's willing to sign to a reasonable deal, the Oilers listen, but I think likely he signs elsewhere, but he won't be the only guy over the next 10 years who ends up getting a big fat pay day thanks in large part to McDavid.
