Value of: Patrick Maroon's next contract?

maroon has alot of similarity to pouliot and a guy like rene bourque... bryan bickell... dustin penner

guys who can be useful when they work hard... stay in shape... are playing for a contract

but

can be completely utterly useless if they decide they are going to go for a skate for the next 76 games

on a 1 year deal for low money gambling on these guys can pay off huge. sadly giving one of them a long term deal guarantees you a hole in your lineup

maroon could prove me wrong but theres a reason anaheim ate his contract to dump him. this guy can become a ghost

All of this

He only produces with Mcdavid and even on Mcdavids line he's been invisible lately. I'd offer no more then 3x3 for him.

I dont think the Oilers will be able to offer him a reasonable deal and will be forced to walk away from him.

resigning McDavid will be priority #1. After that, Nurse, Benning, Brossoit, Slepychev and Caggiula will all need new contracts.

Probably wont leave much for Maroon.

Again. Its. 3. million. Over 300 players make 3 million in the NHL. Lets not try and act like 3 million is some major cap hit that hes gotta really prove it to be worth it. If you could sign him for 2 or 3 years at 3 million, especially after 2 and a bit years meshing with McDavid- youd be an idiot not to

You can't ice a great team if you have a superstar player making superstar salaries and are paying your 3rd liners 3 million dollars.

When is the last time he played 3rd line. Maroon leads the league in clutch goals. Those being goals scored to tie a game and goals to go ahead 1.

That's a pretty good summary.

I'm a bit weary of giving him over 3.5M and more than 3 years. He's a player who's a pure product of McDavid and I'm a fan of Maroon

Except Maroon has a lot more skill than Bouma. Bouma is a good energy player, Maroon actually has some skill for a big guy. Poor comparison.

Bouma got 16Gs with Backlund. Maroon will get ~26Gs with McDavid. Sounds about right.

He was a scratch player on Anaheim. You really want to spend 10 million on chemistry?

chris simon scored 29 goals once... while being centered by adam oates.

Maroon isn't that far off the numbers he posted playing with the Ducks either.

He's been a full time NHLer for 4 seasons now and has put up

29 points in 62 games
34 points in 71 games
27 points in 72 games
36 points in 70 games (so far)

While his goal and assist totals are skewed differently, his production isn't all that much higher player with McDavid than when he was playing with Getzlaf/Perry. There is value in having a guy who can pretty seamlessly slide in and play with other teams elite players.

I do agree with the sentiment that he shouldn't be getting a huge deal though. Something around 3.5 for 3 years or so, although I anticipate it being closer to 4yx4m or so. These types of players perpetually get bigger players than everyone anticipates.

Maroon is a GREAT fit in Edmonton. However I wouldn't sign him for some great reasons already posted in this thread. The only thing to consider is that anyone you put with McD will produce and Maroon is the right type of guy to be the third wheel with McD and Draisatl. The problem is Edmonton needs to have Draisatl at the number 2 centre, so now I don't think Maroon is the right player once they do that.

You mean the scratch player that played on a line with Getzlaf and Perry the entire year in 2014-15? Boudreau and TM both saw him fit to man the top line

ouma had 1 good year where he posted 16 goals and 34 points. He is Ryan Jones. Not our fault Flames management got extremely dumb with him

Maroon could very well end up with 28-30 goals this year and wait and see next year.

Should be worth at least 5M a year then!

So just get proven wrong multiple times then throw in a dumb comment.. Ok then...

Lance bouma sucks and the flames messed up with a bad contract. Boo hoo. Not sure what your trying to prove

Feels like Maroon's next contract has a very high chance of being a complete disaster for whoever signs him.

If the Oil decide to keep him, I hope they keep the term to 3 or less years and keep the AAV starting with a 3 or less.

So you want to pay him like an average-to-low end third line player or a 4-5 defenseman? The average player on a cap team will be making about 3.2M in 2018/2019, the first year of any new extension for him.

You're gonna be in the ~4 range here, and that's if he and his agent are willing to understand that he's a capable middle-six winger elevated by Connor McDavid - not a top line producer on his own.

I would not re-sign him until the end of the 2017-2018 season, I want a motivated Maroon next season and playoffs since we should be competing for a cup. I want him hungry and giving his all, no security for him.

Yes.

The only thing he contributes is scoring. Not a great defensive player, he doesn't kill penalties, and he's not out there driving his own line. As soon as the scoring dries up, and you can bet that it eventually will, there's literally no role left for him on the team.

So yes, I would pay him like a one-dimensional, bottom-six forward. If he wants more $, he's more than welcome to go play somewhere else. I would much rather find myself looking for another skilled but under appreciated LW, than find myself saddled with an expensive and un-tradable contract.

i hear one reason maroon has been consistent this year is he lost alot of weight in the off season... he deserves praise for this

but not everyone keeps in shape. if he gets a longterm deal that guarantees him 10+ million to retire on... what happens next?

some guys play hockey because they love hockey... they live breath and bleed hockey... other guys play it because they have talent and like the money

at nhl level they all have talent... but to succeed means playing through pain... sacraficing 24/7 to keep top shape... ptting out effort every shift

maybe maroon will do this but he didnt do it in the past. if i was in charge i would want to keep him motivated until he proves he deserves long term deal.

i am ok paying him what a 25 goal scorer makes... 3.5-4 mill seams fair... i just wouldnt go long term
