Unless I'm sadly mistaken (and I don't believe I am), there is no LTIR benefit for a 35+ contract.

I think that only applies if Marleau is bought out or retired. His cap hit remains if either of these happen. I believe it would be the same as any other player if he were placed on LTIR.

Marleau isn't going anywhere unless he chooses to go back to San Jose. He is a Leaf otherwise another season nobody else even if they wanted him would he go to.

Honestly, I would hate to help out the leafs, but Ottawa would absolutely do that. Low salary but a high cap hit to hit the floor. And a vet to mentor the kids. Wouldn't give much for him though.

Also, not sure why he'd ever want to come here lol

Could probably easily keep his kids in the same school / house.

Marleau + 2020 3rd to Montreal for a nothing contract.

Marleau 50%retained to San Jose for a 3rd round pick in 2020..

Assuming San Jose wants him back and Montreal still has space, which is likely.

Seems like there’s a thread about this every other week. San Jose is not taking him back for multiple reasons.

1. San Jose is in a cap crunch to sign multiple core pieces (Karlsson, Meier, Pavelski).

2. San Jose has moved on and replaced his production through trades and player development.

The only scenario that really makes sense is if Marleau is ready to retire and help the Leafs.

Hossa and Zetterberg didn’t seem to care for 1-2m, Marleau probably isn’t excited for that salary either at 39, going on 40.

Leafs pay bonus to Marleau on July 1st

Leafs send Marleau and a pick to Arizona afterwards to Arizona, he retires. Arizona gets the 6.25m cap hit but pay zero actual dollars. Leafs lose a pick but get cap savings.

That’s basically it.
Dont think he can straight up retire because his contract was signed at 35+ yo.

He can, just if he retires (and whichever teams roster he retires on), the team gets the full cap hit against them.

Of course he could straight up retire if he wanted to. He can retire but his cap hit would still count towards the teams salary cap since it's a 35+ contract.

Marleau retiring would be doing the Leafs a pretty big favor regarding their tight cap situation for next season. Trading that cap hit to a team trying to reach the cap floor while not having to pay any actual money should be quite easy to do.

Oh yes he can, I just meant his cap hit would still count against the cap!

Yeah but for a team like Arizona it's fine. Leafs would send a draft pick with Marleau as a thank you. Arizona pays $0 but gets the cap hit.

Hossa and Z are still getting paid, they have not officially retired. When they signed their deals I’m sure they were prepared to walk away from the final 2-3 years of their deals and leave that money. NHL basically called everyone’s bluff that they al planned to play out the contract with the recapture clause.

Now those players get their full salary and some nhl team has to take the cap hit.

Marleau, won’t get his salary if he retires.

Retiring is completely up to him. Easy for the Leafs to move off their books if he does.

But it’s a big issue if he wants to continue playing.

Yep, it is all up to Marleau. It is a hypothetical road we're traveling down here. I don't think Marleau will care about 1.25M though if he has made 90-95M(?) in his career.

Basically, he is 39 and will be 40 by next season I believe, he's mostly been a passenger and definitely not worth the 6.25M cap hit. They also structured his deal in a very interesting way.

It'll be Marleau's call at the end of the day and whether or not he feels up for playing. I don't think he'll play elsewhere though. He's either playing for Toronto or Leafs pay bonus July 1st and trade him somewhere and he retires. Team he goes to will be hit for 6.25M cap hit but won't pay a dime to Marleau. Leafs likely compensate them with a pick and everyone moves on.

Yeah, what cap floor team is Marleau going to waive for? He’s chasing a Cup, not the lottery.

I think the only possible way the Leafs get out of his contract is if they win a Cup this season and he decides to exit on a high note.
Winning this year is fine by me!

Could always use Ottawa as a bumper to retain half and send him to back to San Jose. Asset from us, asset from San Jose.
