I expect him to remain a Leaf.

If we're discussing options, there's the obvious one everyone is discussing of him possibly being of value to a cap floor team.

The other is a return to San Jose, should he wish to retire there.

How much space does Dubas want to generate?

Cos if he is desperate to make as much space as possible and Marleau would only accept a return to San Jose... could retain 50% and save over $3m on the cap, San Jose get him on what is a decent value contract.

You wouldn't want to, but that is the reason why any team with young players will want him.
But the Mathews and Marners and Reilly's of the world frown upon this stuff. That's part of the deal as well. So when JT gets old and his contract becomes a problem is he in fear of a trade?

A large and vocal portion of a fanbase demanding that Marleau be moved won't be the thing that convinces him to stay another season. Not sure it would affect anything negatively, but it certainly won't help him make the decision play for another year.

He has a NMC, is declining, and has a large cap hit. I think it may be time to start to assume he'll be a leaf next year, and move on to another whipping boy.
Who is demanding Marleau be moved?

Sure, but it is also a business. People get traded all the time. Marleau is in control of his situation. He would have to agree.

Right now Mats Zuccharello probably wishes he signed a NMC deal like Marleau because he really doesn't want to get traded.

The fly in the oitment: SJ probably needs that $3M in cap space next season.

If the cap goes up by $3.5M, they will have $25.5M available to sign Karlsson, Pavelski, Meier, Thornton, Donskoi, Labanc and 2-3 more players.

SJ does not want Marleau back at any costs. Whether you retain 50% or not, we do not want him. Many posters have repeatedly said this, but so many people keep insisting SJ will just gladly take him back.

If SJ wanted him on that contract, they would've signed him to it.
