Trade him where? He has a no move. Unless he develops some kinda allergy and hits the LTIR and some team would want his cap hit to reach the cap floor or something. Anything short of that, he stays put in Toronto.

Trade and retire with Arizona. He has a low salary high cap so he’s attractive to that kind of team

Great so why is Arizona attractive to Marleau?

Trade and RETIRE as in hell never play there and he gets his signing bonus money too. As a real professional I doubt he’d make himself play next year as he’s done like dinner although his stats aren’t horrible somehow

Why wouldn't he just retire as a Leaf on July 3rd and then the Leafs can trade his cap hit?

So why does he want to retire?

I think they trade him to a team like Arizona with an asset, they buy him out and the Leafs re-sign him at a much cheaper cap hit. Similar to what Washington did with Orpik.

For all that to happen he would have to be traded before July 1st and before the Leafs pay Marleau's 3m bonus since the first buyout period ends June 30th. It would then cost Arizona 3.8m in real dollars to buyout Marleau plus pay the player who will take Marleau's spot on the roster which adds at least a league minimum 650k or an ELC contract so now Arizona is paying between 4.5-4.7m.

When all is said and done it would be cheaper for Arizona to actually pay Marleau the 4.25m which is owed to him to play for them instead of buying him out and adding another player to replace him on their roster. Can't see Arizona potentially spending upwards to 4.7m to add about 1.5m to their cap.

If Marleau retired and Arizona didn't have to pay Marleau any actual money and only take his retired cap hit then it would make far more sense to them. Trading for him and then buying him out so the Leafs can re-sign him for cheaper isn't very appealing to Arizona at all.

He joined the leafs on hope of winning a cup. I would be surprised if he didn't play his contract there.

Perhaps if the leafs win it all this year, this could happen.

If his play continues the way it is, he’ll be a 40 year old watching from the press box as a healthy scratch annually next year. His choice really

Agreed, doesn't make fiscal sense for AZ to do that. They count every penny.

Seems like a lot of posters don't know about the buyout period being in June and signing bonuses generally paid on July 1, which is the beginning of a new NHL fiscal season. There's a second buyout window, but that involves the team having arbitration cases as well as that player having to be on the roster by a certain point in time to be a candidate for a buyout.

Honestly, for Marleau to still play next season and the Leafs to get him off their books, they are going to have to find a 3 way type deal. Send him to AZ for them to retain a portion is his $1.25 million salary, then have AZ send him off to a team he wants to be one. It's the Brassard trade between Pitt/Ott/LV last season. If the Leafs retained 20% which is $1.25 million cap, that leaves AZ with $5 million, then if they retained, it's $2.5 million to the final team in terms of cap ($500K in real money).

First part of the transactions wouldn't be too difficult to do, it's the second part which is completely dependent on the couple of teams that Marleau would ok going to actually wanting him for the cap that he would cost them. Does it make sense for them? Who knows.

Well, if he wants to retire so badly as you think, then why wouldn't he just do that instead of moving his family again. He definitely is not winning a cup in Arizona.

Is this rocket science to you ? He gets traded and then retires. He doesn’t move his family or anything. Did Datsyuk, Hossa or Prongee ever move to Arizona ?
Seems to me it is to you. He wants to win the cup, NOT RETIRE.

I think anyone postulating Marleau is going to retire before his contract ends to do anyone “a favor” is being ridiculous. Marleau is a quietly prideful guy and is less than 2 seasons away from topping the all time games played list.

For a player that’s been known as an iron man I could think of no single record that would solidify his legacy in the league more than that. I’ve yet to see any reasoning that would even be remotely compelling from Marleau’s perspective to forgo a shot at that record by retiring early.

I think the likeliest outcome is Marleau remains with the leafs for the term of his contract, they either get their lesser RFAs to take short term bridge deals and make another push for the cup - or if they end up having to trade off some of those RFAs to make the cap work, have a transition year while waiting for Marleau’s contract to come off the books. After that between contracts coming off the books and an ever-growing cap the Leafs will be well positioned to add any free agents needed to replace anything lost in the previous year.
