This is a bit surprising, and I’m wondering if was made possible because of promises Yzerman made about improving the roster further. Like, we’re gonna sign Stamkos and Roy and all the good players and win the Cup.

And while we're shooting for the moon, imagine for a moment, however unlikely...

...that Nate Danielson starts his NHL career by centering Patrick Kane and Steven Stamkos.

And looks good doing it. :partytime:

so when i said like 6 months ago that we should get kane to sign a MINIMAL contract with a couple mil in bonuses to capitalize on the 35+ contracts, i was laughed out of the room....

now, is 4 million minimal is the next argument. I was shooting for 3 mil i think but had enough bonuses to get to 7, so...tomato tomato eh

One of the conditions of Kane coming back was the Wings had to lose Walman ASAP for fear of ruining more of his celebrations.

If you told me Steve may be bringing in Kaner, Stammer, and Trouba five years, heck even three years ago I’d be streaking through the neighborhood clamoring for a Cup.

But to be honest, I think he could sign all 3 of those guys and it doesn’t move the playoff needle very much. All three are out of their primes. Trouba was not good last year. NY wants him gone. Stammer and Kane are both power play specialists who I don’t think can play competitive 5on5 playoff caliber hockey anymore. We saw how much Kaner needs sheltered at even strength. Stammer is approaching that territory.

I’d honestly rather lean on our youth and either sink or swim than logjam our roster with average to slightly above average vets.

but if we have enough cap to take on the 2.5 bonuses, it can be applied to this years cap ;)

(in case you didn't know that)
Ya absolutely. I believe we'll be spending every last dollar though

So you're saying an 80 point winger that can slot in as 1c while Larkin is injured is average?

The entire point is to get to the playoffs. The young guys (including a late 20's Larkin) NEED some playoff experience. But to get it, they need to actually make it in. Kane, Stammer and even Trouba would help get them there. Maybe they win a round, maybe they dont. But they get a taste and youve hopefully got a spot for a Danielson or Kasper to get a taste as well. Kane proved he could still put up the points, Stamkos too.

i think we will be too, but man, if we could somehow shed that 2.5 mil at the trade deadline to get rid of a bloated contract somehow (not likely i know) that would be incredible and leave a bit more off the table next year.

Great deal! Welcome back Kaner

Now I read this a couple months ago after the season ended and I can't remember which thread or who said it. I heard that there was some locker room troubles when Larkin went down and exacerbated the losing streak that Detroit endured. Kane was kind of in the middle of it (not intentionally) and the team lost its direction. They were so damn terrible and it seemed like something was up

Please clarify this for me because I did think the team was benefitting from his presence and leadership?

Stamkos next please! If the rumors are true at him wanting 5m that's a bargain. He put up 40 goals last year (to all the stupid haters). He has better career stats than Kane!

I was highly skeptical when he was coming back from injury, and Kane totally proved me wrong. I'm fine with this deal and the bonus. The cap is expected to rise and we could gain $15 million in cap space through expiring contracts from Fabbri, Petry, Määtta, Husso and Lyon. Obviously we'd need to add a goalie, but I don't see a problem with the bonus at all.

It surprises me how many fans think that a rebuild should look like a square wave - be horrendous until every single piece is in place, then magically flip the switch, win the President's Trophy, and sail to multiple championships.

Threw up a like because I find it too funny that these same names (Stamkos, Petry, Trouba) were THE trade and FA names 8 or so years ago.

I think Stamkos still has something left in the tank 5v5. He’s still a powerplay merchant though. I’m glad to have Kane back though. He’s got no defense but he’s in a league of his own.
