Saratoga (New York):
  • Racing: Off the turf the always anticipated Spa opener.
  • Handle: $18.5 million.
  • Race 9: The Queens M G (Dylan Davis/Saffie Joseph) won the Schuylerville Stakes at the astounding odds of 44-to-1. The $91 winner contributed to many noticeable exotics payouts.
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 5 was exorbitant $124,000+.
Charles Town (West Virginia):
  • Serious chalk through the first seven races gave no indication of what was to become despite a 13-to-1 winning the finale. The $1 Pick 6 returned over $147,000 but there was only $14,000 in the pool.
The Meadows (Pennsylvania):
  • Race 10 Meadowbrook Glider paid $142.40/$113.80/$16.80 and at 70-to-1 was the second longest shot on the board. The $2 tri paid $12,000. The $2 double was over $1,000.
  • Race 11: Ravenous paid $118.40 and at 58-to-1 was the longest shot on the board. The $2 exacta exceeded $1,000. The $2 double paid "only" $929.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $22.6 million.
  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 6 returned an astronomical $256,000.
  • Albert Stall and Mark Casse are the only trainers through two days with more than one victory. Neither is recognized as a NYRA trainer.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Jeiron Barbosa rode five winners today on six mounts. None of the winners was the favorite.

Brittany Russell kills me. Baby girl in one arm, baby boy in the other arm and she manages to direct the horse into the winner's circle. And not just any horse, an $850,000 purchase once under Bob Baffert's care. Hubby on board. What a star.

Horseshoe Indy (Indiana):
  • Race 4: Charlene's Dream (Evin Roman/Ed Moger, Jr.) won the $150,000 Horseshoe Indiana Handicap and paid $74.50 in the shocking result.
  • Race 5: Lucky Jeremy (Jaime Torres/Michael Maker) won the $150,000 Caesar's Handicap. The $2 double in a pair of six-figure handicaps paid $827.
Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • A Pair of Fives: Serafin Carmona rode five winners including four for local star trainer McLean Robertson who was a powerful 10 5-2-1 on a day filled with Minnesota breds.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Rafael Hernandez finished a strong day 8 4-3-1.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Roughly $98 million bet through the opening weekend, four days, and that included at least one record-setting day. Final tabulations have yet to be seen. The Spa is a godsend amid otherwise flux. A throwback!
  • Race 9: Star of Mystery (Flavien Prat/Charlie Appleby) won the $175,000 Grade 3 Quick Call Stakes. The Irish-bred filly gave Euro-breds a 1-2-3 finish in the field of seven. The lone filly was sent off the favorite at 3-to-5.
  • Leading Jockey: Flavien Prat has seven wins. We are roughly halfway through 2024 but as of now he is my candidate for Eclipse Award Outstanding Jockey of the Year. His skillset has become more than noticeable it is almost flawless.
  • Leading Trainer: No one has exceeded three wins yet but Cherie DeVaux id 50% at 3-for-6.
  • John Velazquez is 0-for-13. The Hall of Famer was barely on the radar. That probably will change but noteworthy.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 10: The $2 Pick 5 paid in excess of $155,000. The $.20 Pick 6 bet was nailed for $316,000+. A day at the track down the Jersey Shore and $316k seems like a good day out.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Card: Three stakes.
  • Race 1: Tojo's Mojo (Jorge Ruiz/John Salzman, Jr.), oozing a pulsating energy, smacked the field in a driving finish in second-time-out status with a trainer who has a solid mark in that category. Tojo's Mojo is the first offspring to hit the track for sire Name Changer who, among his wins, was a graded stakes in Monmouth (NJ). Obviously, he is still very green but once that is cleaned this horse is ready to rock and roll.

  • Race 4: Play Like a Raven (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) has now won consecutive starts. The Maryland-bred, presumably named for the local NFL team, is another potential star in the Russell barn but today was a brilliant ride from Sheldon. Look here at what I think was among the rides of the day (follow the 7).

  • Race 5: Alla Breve (Horacio Karamanos/Michael Matz) won the Jameela Stakes.

  • Race 7: Forever Souper (Mychel Sanchez/Michael Trombetta) won the Prince George's County Stakes.

  • Race 8: Whenigettoheaven (J.G. Torrealba/Nolan Ramsey) won the $75,000 Ben's Cat Stakes. Ramsey, in his first year training, won a stakes for the first time. He is the 27-year-old grandson to famed owner Kenneth Ramsey. The stakes is named for Maryland legend Ben's Cat who won 32 times from 63 starts and earned over $2.6 million. The Cat is buried at Laurel which, presumably means the remains will transfer elsewhere when doomsday comes for the venerable track in three years.

Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • David Cohen-Larry Rivelli teamed three times and each horse returned a victor.
