Callahan likely isnt gonna be moved ... he is basically clarkson 2.0.

Just a thought. what would the expected return for johnson be if the leafs decided to eat callahans contract?

So, if Callahan was Clarkson 2.0, now your interested in the Leafs acquiring him? Going in circles here? LOL.

Nylander/Marner

not a deal either Toronto or the Bolts are really looking to make.

Eh... I think tampa would take either and run tbh. Both are having damn good years and having those two on ELC's for next season and in marners case the season after would be pretty damn nice I would think. But losing Palat would be a huge hit.

If you're trading Johnson, would Backlund + another valuable piece be considerable? Then we can trade Bennett for a 3rd line center and a 4D on a great contract.

As a Flames fan I really want Palat. Paladin-Backbreaker-Froyo would be the best D 2-way forward line in the league.

Another flames fan made a post like this just... yesterday I think? No.

This makes no sense for the Leafs. We are literally stacked with young F's and our F prospects are lighting it up. We have excellent C depth in Matthews, Nylander, Kadri, and our only need right now is RD that can play heavy defensive minutes on the top two pairings.

No sense moving the pieces needed for something that is a luxury.

There is zero chance Filpulla is traded to Toronto. It's well known that Babcock and Filpulla can't stand each other and that Babcock is the reason Filpulla left Detroit.

Good point. Forgot about that.

Flip has been shockingly good so far this year, so, if he keeps this up, we should be able to move him. But yeah, sounds like Toronto wouldn't be the best fit.

Edmonton?

If there was a gurantee that either of those guys would play well I would definitely jump on it. We are trying to win now though and Palat is such a key part of that

You can make a strong case for any of our top six forwards as to why they shouldn't be the odd man out - that's what's going to make this offseason so challenging. When it comes to Palat he is our best two-way forward (though one could argue that Killorn surpasses him in the playoffs) and improves the numbers of every single forward he plays with. We have a lot of scorers in the top six and a couple of high potential guys in the organization who might be able to step into that role eventually (Gusev and Point), but we don't have a ready replacement for Palat's skill set. That doesn't necessarily mean he won't be the odd man out, but it does make us reluctant to move him unless we're clearly going to win the trade.

Really if Palat would score more in the postseason we wouldn't even consider trading him, but with Kucherov, Johnson, and Killorn being our top three playoff scorers, Stamkos being untouchable, and Drouin being so dangerous offensively with such a high ceiling it's difficult to say who we would move in his place. A lot will probably come down to how they perform this season/postseason, what the RFAs are asking for, and what teams are offering in trade; at the moment though it's difficult to say who will be available and who won't (aside from Kucherov who is going nowhere.)

The fact that we got into this season without moving anybody is HUGE. Because, after this season, the expansion draft will be over, which will make some of our contracts a whole lot more tradeable.

If Filppula can finish the season the way he started it, it should be easy to find takers on him, so long as he's willing to waive his no trade clause. He might actually have legit value by the off-season. He's been, what? Our 5th/6th best player so far?

Callahan would be the toughest to move, still, I think. He'll still have three years left, with (it looks like, as of now) very little chance of justifying his contract on the ice.

It MIGHT become a lot more feasible for us to move Garrison, with how good Koekkoek has looked so far. I've always maintained that we can't risk moving Garrison until Koekkoek shows he's ready for a top-4 role.

If I'm not mistaken, Coburn doesn't have any sort of trade protection.

Bishop will be gone (sadly).

What I'm saying is, the expansion draft was really screwing us over, because nobody wants to protect veteran players right now. But by getting Kucherov under contract without having to move anyone, Yzerman has actually given us a legit shot to keep most, if not all, of the core together (I still think we're losing Killorn to Vegas). We have the opportunity to shed a lot of salary next year, when veterans might be way, way more in demand than they are right now.

Yeah, I think we're going to be in pretty decent shape in that we'll still be loaded regardless of who we lose, but I also don't see a way we can keep our entire top six intact unless we can somehow move/buyout both Filppula and Callahan with little retention between the two of them. We definitely can't from an expansion perspective and we realistically won't be able to from a cap standpoint either. I think our best hope of accomplishing that is to somehow move Filppula with zero retention (adding an incentive if necessary to do so) and then to buy out Callahan; I agree that finding a taker for Cally is probably going to be impossible.

I also tend to agree that Killorn will probably be the odd man out, but he's just been so clutch in the postseason that I hate to see him go. At the same time though I'm not sure who I'd lose to keep him. It's a good problem to have, trying to decide which of your collection of high end talent you have to let go, but it's still going to suck to see some of these guys leave. Just the reality of living in a salary cap world - though a Stanley Cup would certainly ease our pain.:)

While that guarantee isn't available, I think Willy would probably be the best bet at being the real deal this season and going forward (IMO)
