P.K. Subban - What happened?

His game was contingent on speed. Injuries greatly slowed him down, and he had no strengths left to perform as a superstar anymore. No sense in hurting yourself for one-year, minimum-wage contracts.
He would have been getting more than minimum wage. Plus there's always a sucker out there. See Stamkos. But I dont know, sounds like his falloff was worse than i thought

My friend played with him and mentioned how he didn't care about his teammates while also being competitive with them when they didn't want to be all the time. Guy was just super competitive, but his mindset is a big factor as to why because he got so full of himself that it just affected his game. He also was shallow, like if you chirped his style he didn't take it too well and once made fun of a minor league call-up telling him how he didn't have what it took to make the NHL. He was also not quite nice to lots of his teammates, also believes he can make fun of you but can't make fun of him.

She's alright, but it's not like other players wives and girlfriends are not of the same standard or higher.
She’s a legendary pro athlete who’s made her own way in the world. Represented her country, was the face of the sport, role model to a generation of girls, etc etc.

Don’t pay attention to too many wives/gf’s but seems like lots of instathots and trad wife types. Not aware of anyone as accomplished or so highly regarded in their field as Vonn

Got paid, then when he realized he couldn't play without slewfooting other players every game he figured it was time to hang them up.

Injuries took most of his speed and quickness, which was probably his prime attribute early in his career, along with his strength and slap shot.

Then, presumably in an effort to compensate for this, he put on about 10-15 lbs of muscle, which took any speed and quickness he had left. With him already being a stocky/compact guy, this was extremely detrimental to his game.

I’m not sure who convinced him (if anyone) that this was a good idea, but someone should’ve realized this and set him straight. PK is PK though; maybe they did and he just didn’t listen.

I recall hearing that he loved fitness and practically lived in the gym and was doing bodybuilding/powerlifting style workouts, which is just stupid for an NHL player and not conducive to success in hockey. Dude thought he was an NFL lineman and trained like it, pretty much.

I still think about Benning agreeing to that massive trade where if Columbus doesn’t choose PLD then:

Vancouver sends
Horvat, 5th overall, and Tanev
Montreal sends
subban

Was that the same draft where he was rumored to be involved in a deal for Draisaitl? Everybody dodging bullets on that one.

It’s absolutely shocking Jim Bob Benning hasn’t been hired to be another team’s GM. He is do SMRT.

Injuries, poor training habits, poorer fundamentals. When his high end athleticism cratered he didn't have a solid foundation to fall back to.

This, he's one of those freak athlete types who can make their own style work but yeah once that physicality goes away he couldn't fall back on a basic game.

Dreger, Friedman, McKenzie all said it was there

But Columbus was 95% locked in but if that 5% chance they choose pool party or anybody else

Then the trade happens

I do remember the slew-footing becoming a calling card for him in his last year or two. Thanks for all the replies! I had no idea about the bulking up and screwing his back up.

He lost a step. He changed his game into more of a physical 3rd pairing guy that still had a solid shot. He was still good enough to probably last another 3 years as a depth guy but the media opportunity was obvious and it pays better with less of a commitment than professional athletes do.
He also is a great ambassador for the game and that's his hockey role now.

He was never as good as a hockey player as some imagined but he had a good career and has respect for the game.

People need to appreciate his hockey passion.

This. He was at one time a beast in terms of his training and physique. Then he let himself go.

His game was based on agility and once he got chubby he was lumbering across the ice.
It’s hard to train like these guys need to off season and in season to stay at the strength and fitness level needed if injuries get in the way. I think PK has some injuries creep up on his training. He got a bit chubby as a result. Like you say he lost his quickness.
