Owen Sound Attack 2024-25 Season Thread, Part II

Something tells me there is going to be major turnover...some may not be here that we expected to be
You beat me to this. I'll just add even though I understand it's fun to play with lineups and I like reading them it's pretty early to be doing it.

The team finished 5th last, I think they almost have to make changes and bring in better players. I think a lot of these players, rightly or wrongly, are about as good as they can get and replacing them with players with higher upside is needed. Be it an 08 or 09 or an 06 or 07 elsewhere.

I suspect a lot that happens organically with Attack prospects and newly drafted players pushing for roles and roster spots. I think the floor of the team will rise with the key young players being a year older and the physical growth of an offseason. I think the ceiling goes up with a player like Sykora reporting and a good import pick.

Could they make improvements through trade? Sure. I don't know how likely that will be though. I still think the best version of this team is another season away. How many assets do you want to spend now for an upgrade? Can that be offset by moving some of the roster surplus? There might be some guys that don't crack the roster, 08 or 07 age players potentially that you could get some value for outside of some 06s that may fall on the outside looking in. There's depth in the prospect pool and on the roster that I can't recall having in my time here.

I think the team should be substantially better next season. I'm pretty excited for this team moving forward.

It's early for sure. There's still a lot of offseason work to do for management including the U18 draft and import draft. It's fun to think about but lots of questions to sort out before we get any true clarity on the situation. There's a lot of exciting pieces in this puzzle though.

I believe that the Petes traded for an 05 that was basically replacement level last year (Jenkin), and gave up a 3/5/6, for me thats the bare minimum you could get for Rogers. I think he's better and if you move him, you get picks that could be used for upgrades in future years.

I also think Teresigni, who I like, has hit the wall and is what he is, a player like Vandeven or Prud'Home at least brings more then he will. Cormier, who has evolved into a pretty good defensive guy with shot blocking, for me is holding up a guy like Kindree moving up the lineup.

I would have said Mason Wray as well, however he showed a lot in the second half and earned an opportunity to move forward. I think Nansi will be back, but on a short leash. As everyone says, he has the tools to dominate and you need to see if another year will allow that too happen. Look at the Knights, they never had kids 'hit' until they are 19, I don't think we need to rush him out the door just yet.

I don't think they drafted McCrate if there at least wasn't a decent change he wanted to come. The name was not popular out there and he's more of a 'Now' player then a 'later' player.

Interesting player will be Crawford. One of the best 07s in the OHL last year, he really hit a wall in the second half. Im curious if he can make that jump to a 40pt hard to play against guy next year. More depth in the lineup may let him play with better players next year. I love the idea of him, Wray and Nansi together if Nansi can figure out 'North to South' hockey.

The 08 and 09 class will be fun to watch.

Kwajah, Arnett, Roy, MBuyi should be go to guys, with someone like Vandeven perhaps a good depth player (Mason Wray type).

Assume they start with Deslile, Munnings, and Jackman as 09s. Those 7/8 players seem very strong group with the new 'hard skill' Attack team.

I have no idea what market value is on a guy like Rogers. That may be a fair comparable. Depends on what the market will bear. He's a useful player so I'd imagine somebody would be willing to pay something of value.

I think Vandeven and Prud'homme are likely players but I'm not sure both on are on the Attack next season. One of them could be sent to another team for a pick or two.

Mason Wray I really liked. He's big and can skate. I thought he was pretty effective on the forecheck and could PK and work on the 2nd PP unit. His scoring ticked up with an expanded role in Owen Sound that gives optimism that there's still more there. I really liked the line of Wray - Crawford - Nansi. That seems to be a nice complimentary trio.

The 08 group is really strong at the top end and seems to have depth as well. We'll have to wait and see on the 09 group but it looks promising.

McCrate seems like more of a flyer to me due to two reasons, one his NCAA commitment kicks in next season and two, he was taken in the 7th round. 7th round pick would seem appropriate to take a riskier pick, especially given the Attack picked twice in that round. Obviously if he comes he'd be a nice addition to the blueline but I'm not confident in that the way I feel confident about Sykora. I'd love to be wrong though.

The team badly needs some offense from the back end. Someone who can run the power play. That is a must for the team moving forward.

Jet Kwajah and Mason Roy with Petrovski as the top pairing guy. Each pair has an offensive puck moving type.

Kwajah had a very good year in the USHL and everyone says he's coming. Fits in perfect as a PP1 guy next year.

Its funny how different people look at things differently.

The fact that he is an 07 and a 7th round pick is why I think he's coming. If they wanted to take a flyer, it would be an 08 or 09 who they can work on. I imagine Sykora went higher due to the fact that he is expected to be a high NHL draft pick, not that he has a higher percentage of reporting. I don't imagine either is a guarantee, but I bet its better then not that they will be here in Sept.

I guess the true unknown at this point is what is the CHL club and NCAA club relationship and how might they work together? Would they be more involved with a player choosing to defer a year and go play in the CHL? McCrate would be heading into year 1 in the NCAA as an 18 year old. It does trend as an older league with men in their early 20s. This is the first full season since the eligibility rule changes for the NCAA took effect. I have to imagine it would be in everyone's interest to establish more of a working relationship/partnership. It will be fascinating to see how that evolves over the next few seasons to really understand the ramifications to the changes made.

Another wrinkle for next season is the CHL moving to three import players starting next season. If you're the Attack, why not keep Varosyan and draft two new ones? Maybe not all three crack the roster but it allows you to see what you can get out of Varosyan with a full camp this time around.

You forgot Cole.....

What does DD do with the U18 draft as well.. Curious for sure. Maybe find a tender thats a late bloomer?

An interesting twist, after Harry played in the top prospects game, he is left off NHL final draft list.
Jake Crawford is added .

Because his play fell off drastically. He doesn’t bring much to the table. You couldn’t tell that he wasn’t in the lineup for game 3 of the playoffs.

Just a random thought, but don't NHL camps typically overlap with the first couple exhibition games? If the Attack have three rostered goalies, and all are NHL drafted, and all are away to NHL camps, what do they do for a goalie in those exhibition games? Would they have to sign a 4th goalie or would they be allowed to use an EBUG? Maybe the other team loans them they're back up? Could be a wild scenario.

Good for you guys.

I do think it’s pretty funny though you have both of your goalies ahead of Ben Hrebik though. Probably cause Hrebik is older is my guess but still funny to look at.

Carter is gonna have one hell of a year next year wherever that may be and I’m sure the 2 goalies listed will learn a thing or two from him.

A great opportunity for the2 boys they just drafted .

Is that the eligibility rules, they don't have to be signed but just have the Attack hold their player rights to play? I'm not sure they're allowed to start an EBUG so maybe that just means the U18 pick, Defina, or a Dylan Durno gets the game(s).

I know it's a little bit of chaos but it would be pretty neat to see play out lol. Great problem to have.
