Pretty shitty calling by Dunleavy, could have given the kid something meaningful for the tapes like RJ would have done, instead he praises the pass and then acknowledges Power's first.
What your re expecting, Dunleavy has even a hard time announcing the commercial time outs with grace.
RJ always subtly raised his voice so you knew it was coming

2nd best D since I started watchin the Sabres (1st Dahlin)
Can't remember any significant D until Dahlin since Campbell
and he was not anywhere near these 2

SHOULD he be in the conversation for the Calder? Without a doubt.

WILL he be in the conversation nationally? I doubt it. His counting numbers (IE, pointzzz) aren't enough for him to get any attention.

If he gets invited to the ceremony and finishes 3rd, it's a win in my book.

Berniers has been a major reason for Seattle's success in the same way Power's presence has been an important factor in Buffalo's improvement. Some guys who may also be in the mix might be Thompson from the Knights since he's still considered a rookie, Kotchetkov might be in the mix for December depending on how the Hurricane's dented duo present health-wise down the stretch. Heck, Marchenko is going HARD at the goal scoring version of the Cy Young and could be in consideration.

All of those guys require more nuance than just looking at Berniers raw scoring totals and giving him the vote.

Which is perfectly fine by me, will save us money when negotiating.

And therein lies the problem -- I don't trust the voters to judge with nuance very well at all.

Norris and Calder are so often just point races. And the Norris also gets reputation instead of just a single season but that is a digression.

If Power keeps up the last few weeks offensively and continues to even out the defensive deficiencies, it is going to be massive for the push toward a playoff spot. I love that he had gotten back to his aggressive pinching, where he goes from being at the point to one of their only “forwards” presenting shot options close to the net front. I joke that he is their second best forward on the ice on some shifts - that isn’t a dig at his defensive play, that’s how I want more of their forwards to take/attack space around dangerous areas.

He is able to get to those areas quietly in the more literal sense, he is able to just slip in those spots basically uncontested and is able to get back the way he is able to roam around the ice is excellent.

I hate that the Calder is so much about offensive numbers. I think Beniers is definitely putting up a season to be in the running, but for a 20 year old rookie defenseman to play the all situation top 4 minutes Power has? I think they are the top 2. Vegas though has the odds of Power winning at 7th, .....cause its all about offense.

I think Jake Sanderson has been right there with Power also. He may not have the underlying offensive impact Power has had but he's been really good so far both at even strength and on special teams. He actually leads the Sens in TOI shorthanded, almost 3 minutes a game which is pretty crazy for a 20 year old rookie.

Mike Kelly talking about how sure he is of Power being in his top three for Calder on Kyper and Bourne just now. Singing his praises for minute munching and how much offense and transition flows from him as a rookie. About 65-ish minutes in.

it was like 2 weeks ago he was on and never mentioned Power, then espn releases a poll of nhl voters that puts him in the top 3 and suddenly power is his lock top 3

but ill be honest, right around the point dahlin got the all star nod, the sabres talk has dramatically increased in frequency, its like the entire media noticed that buffalo wasnt at the bottom of the league

I know steve dangle found out about a week ago live

I will never not have fun poking fun at his podcast and their reaction to them not knowing who Samuelsson was.

There was a lot of that reaction from places. Why would you want to admit to your audience that you know so little about the thing they come to you for opinions on? It was weird and people couldnt wait to tell you.

If you want to do a segment on getting a seven year deal after 56 games…hey…im here for it. I didn’t have one thing to say about people questioning the Tage contract when he blew up out of nowhere. Those are interesting topics that discuss genuine risk taking.

Thats not the show people were doing.

ya but when even the home fans were refusing to watch games, I cant blame a leafs fan for not doing it

honestly though thats what i took away from all star weekend was that no one was paying any attention to the Sabres (except the hockey guy), and when they had to write an article about how 5 goal TNT was out and Dahlin was in, they opened NHL.com's stat page and went holy crap the sabres are kinda scary in this race.

Lest we forget...

Small sample size, but it does seem that in games without Dahlin, Power really steps it up. More assertive, pushing the pace by moving the puck quickly or skating it, going for jaunts in the O-zone. Doesn't do as much of that thing in the D-zone where he makes a move to lose the forechecker, comes to a stop on the wall, and sits there till someone comes to him and then makes a pass.
