Plekanec was a fine and productive center for the Canadiens for a long time.

Plekanec was your prototypical tweener, an interchangeable 3rd/2nd line center, who was responsible defensively could contribute offensively (he had seven seasons where he scored between 20-30 goals) and he could play in all game situations. While Plekanec was a good skater, he lacked Beck's explosiveness and he certainly didn't have Beck's shot. While I believe Beck has a higher offensive upside potential than Plekanec, I don't think anyone here would be disappointed if this fine young player has a career that only mirrors Plekanec's.

We should only be so lucky.
If Beck became Plekanec I would be ecstatic. Would be the perfect option behind Suzuki.

I wouldn’t worry about Beck so much having his development compromised by a potential call up.

If @ChesterNimitz is right about the stamina issue it would likely be the one thing holding him back. If that wasn’t a concern then he likely would never be sent down again.

If I had a choice I’d keep him down there but I don’t think it will be that big a deal honestly.

I have zero doubts that he's an NHLer. But I'm starting to think he might be a rock for us as a 2-way C the moment he puts on the CH. He and Hage might change this entire forwards group.

1st overall in the Q draft, 119pts in 66 games at 18, game-winning assist of the WJC final... he's literally a nobody.
History is filled with prospects who dominated in major junior hockey and couldn't cut it in the NHL. The gap between the NHL and every other league is as wide as the Grand Canyon. Roy's pedigree is impressive, but so was Angelo Esposito's. A star in the Q and for Team Canada, Esposito was drafted 20th overall by Pittsburgh and never played a game in the NHL and was out of hockey eight years after he was drafted. Esposito provides a cautionary tale about placing too much emphasis on pedigree.

Roy's predicament is a familiar story: elite hands and AHL level skating. It would have been much better for Roy for it to have been the other way around. For Roy, the window for him making the Canadiens is closing quickly as he is being chased by a host of promising forward prospects: Demidov, Hage, Beck, Tuch and all those high draft choices that Hughes has and will continue to accumulate.

If Roy can't pick up that extra step in speed I'm afraid he will join Esposito, Hudon and all those other once promising prospects who couldn't jump the Grand Canyon.

Simon Snake Boisvert such a idiot to call him a bad player and see him only as a 4C lol!

This guy have legit 2C // 3C potential at this point. His season with Laval so far show really really great promising. He is a two-way beast. Great offensive tools aswell. Great shot. Great IQ.

This guy is a very good hockey player and he will make Simon Snake Boisvert looking like a dumb shit! Lol

I agree with you...Beck has more upside than many people think.

Who cares what this fool thinks?

Besides, who has a nickname like 'snake' ? Sounds like a "B" grade porn star.

That was my first beef with the guy. How can you be taken seriously with that nickname? Especially since it seems self-imposed.

Now, his takes have sometimes been decent (less hyperbole than fans), other times quite bad. Overall, I'd say he is slightly better than hfboard posters... Still no idea why he manages to get invited on podcasts and shows though..

Why do people here think calling up our prospects “for a look” is a good idea? The Habs are still a rebuilding, bottom level team. Totally different calling a guy up if we’re competitive and successful.
I watch pretty much every Laval game and while we have good prospects and I like them, none of them scream top 6 nhl (yet). So you call a guy up, stick him on the 3rd line, maybe even 4th, play him 10-12 minutes a night. What are you expecting exactly? You think Beck is going to play like he has in Laval recently? He won’t. Roy didn’t either. Neither did Mailloux. Then they get sent back and take a while to adjust and produce again (see Roy and Mailloux). Leave them in Laval to develop and be successful. Scoring and looking good in the ahl isn’t even close to “deserving a look” in the nhl. Make it out of camp. This yo yoing crap has not worked.
And yes, I’ve heard the arguments that that’s what the ahl is for.

Whether he’s a second or third line centre is really semantics. But going forward, the team’s top three centers should be Suzuki, Hage and Beck.

The calvary is coming.

which still leaves us without a true #1 C after 30 years, how sad and pathetic.
