Over 30, current & former NHLers with no kids

I would assume there would be plenty of players past and present that have no children that are over 30. People are having kids later in life unfortunately, and I think that applies to athletes too. So if you can think of people in your life without children over 30 - and we all can - I assume that applies to a lot of hockey players too.

The first name that came to mind for me was Sean Avery. I mean, even in his 40s that guy isn't a father is he? Yep, he is. He and his ex-wife have a son.

Derek Sanderson is 78 and while he and his ex-wife had a child die at birth in 1981 I don't think he had any children after this. So I guess he counts here.

Brent Burns has three children. Wouldn't have guessed it!

Maybe someone can confirm this but I don't believe Billy Smith had children. At least I can't confirm that he does have them. No mention of them.

Outside of hockey I would say Dolly Parton is perhaps the most famous person that didn't have any children that I can randomly think of at the moment. Although she did aid in raising some younger siblings.

Oates, Kariya, Crosby, Toews come to mind; who else over 30 doesn't have kids?

Peter Forsberg now has three kids, but I remember thinking of/joking about him as an asexual guy married to hockey throughout his career. While he was still active, I don’t think he ever featured in any relationship rumors whatsoever? With the celebrity status he had it just seemed you occasionally would have read or heard about him dating someone or having a partner. Not that I would call hockey players’ relationships a point of interest for me, but with ‘everyone else’ you picked up on them being in long term relationships or getting married, and I thought Forsberg curiously stood out in this regard.

And then it seemed like immediately after retirement, he married a younger woman and had three kids.

As to my theory on Foppa being married to hockey, I remember listening to an interview with a former teammate of his (Brad Richards maybe?) who talked about how cool it was as a rookie being brought by Foppa to bars and stuff. Thing was, other players in their 30s typically weren’t bachelors, but Foppa was apparently enjoying life as a single still.

That's an interesting one. Not to derail the thread but Stevie Nicks, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Aniston, Dicaprio, Oprah come to mind. Not sure on these, though.

Most definitely does, at least had two in the 80's.

Maybe this is a 'Swedish media choosing to be polite and not speculate' thing. At least one source about the 2000s Avs (I think Dater) mentions him as having a pretty active dating life. It was implied part of the 2001 brief-fake-retire-back-to-sweden affair was him wanting to avoid an angry ex in Denver.

Betty White (did adopt her second husband's children when she married him, Password's Allen Ludden), Keanu Reeves (girlfriend was pregnant with his child when she was killed in an auto accident), Bob Barker, Jay Leno, Rachel Ray, Helen Mirren, Ricky Gervais, Katharine Hepburn and Wynona Ryder come to mind as well. Oprah attempted to have a child but it was stillborn.

Jagr not having kids would be like Mick Jagger not having kids. No way just based on percentages alone that he didn't have a kid somewhere....................I am guessing :D
I choose to believe that the golden age of NBA centres in the late 1980s into the 1990s was largely fueled by Wilt Chamberlain's exploits in the 1960s and 1970s. Probably not Olajuwon but the rest..... it's just basic probability.

My favorite related theory is how there was a guy on the Cleveland Cavs in the 70s and early 80s who looked a lot like LeBron James

i’ve said this a number of times, but i firmly believe that part of the reason the peak 2004 to 2007 luongo turned into the still excellent but no longer historically great luongo of the peak sedin/kesler/burrows years is he became a dad.

his wife’s turbulent pregnancy in spring of 2008 likely played a part in them missing the playoffs that year, which also led to the firing of dave nonis and hiring of mike gillis. that spring he was flying back and forth between where the team was and florida, to be with her.

but beyond that exceptional situation, when you have a baby, your priorities change. you sleep less, you have a new person in your life to take up a huge amount of real estate in your brain, and i think almost anyone would slip. it never gets talked about, but it would be interesting if there was a study on the all time greats, when they became dads, and the places in their careers where they slip to a lower level, big or small.
