Ovechkin Milestone Thread - Countdown to 894

For what it’s worth, he entered this season with 884 adjusted goals and has scored 13 actual goals this season.

If we call it 897, then he’s 28 shy of the record. And while H-R’s formula isn’t perfect, it’s a really significant thing to be #1 on that list. It’s a closer approximation of how he compares to the other legends than the official unadjusted list.

Only a matter of time. Still too good, still too healthy and plays for a team that has stated their loyalty to help him get there. Impossible it doesn't happen IMO. And it's a happy story we still get to see records broken.

Ovechkin would have to go goalless in his next 20 games for his career Goals per Game to dip below Gretzky's (highest for all players in NHL history with over 1,000 career games played).

At this stage in his career, pretty incredible.

He likely has no chance of passing Gretzky for most home goals, but does he have a shot a second place? Needs another 60 to pass Howe for second, and another 103 to take over first.

Ovechkin is scoring roughly evenly at home and on the road, so he will pass Howe in terms of home goals when he scores 120ish more home and away goals, bringing his career total to about 915. That sounds doable.

Getting another 210ish career goals does not sound realistic, that would require Ovechkin to top 1000 career goals, and only then he would beat Gretzky's home goals record.

Once he fulfills the 894 mark beating, we’ll see. If he finds himself ready for playing, why not to go deeper in his 40-s to break 1000 goals mark?

It’s a bold prediction, but if he’s ready and healthy enough and still able to feel joy of playing, why would he want to stop? Jagr didn’t, as well as some other players too.

1000 is separated from 900 by only three 30+ goal seasons, which seems doable for the great 8, even with aging considered.
