That would be incredibly tough, even with the increased scoring we are seeing. Still, you can never count Ovechkin out. I honestly won't be surprised.
What makes you think that? His goal totals appear ridiculously flat for the last 7 years. Excluding the COVID mini-season, his totals:

49
51
48* (68 games)
48
50 (with 5 games remaining)

Doesn’t exactly scream “tapering off”.

Those were such odd seasons for Ovi I don't get it

Yeah, the talk of him being done as an elite player were ridiculous and premature, but indeed was very odd for a generational scorer to be posting 32 goals and 65 points in full seasons, healthy, and dead smack in the middle of his prime.

Not done as an elite player, but since that season he has never been the best player in the league or really that close. He was on pace to be in GOAT conversations, and the ridiculously lofty expectations we had from his first few years had to be re-examined. For what it’s worth, 2007-2011 OV was the most dominant player I’ve ever seen, and I watched the end of Mario’s prime. Absolutely dominant.

I just realized that this guy has scored 50 goals or more in a season in 3 different decades!
Looked through the top goal scorers all time and doesnt look like anyone else have done this.
Only active player with a shot at this are Draisatl (In his 34 age season in 29/30) as he have already done two decades.

Seems like a good time to repost this and make sure it’s not forgotten.

Between 1981 and 1995 I count 31 times somebody broke 60+ goals. Some years there were as many as ten 50+ goal scorers.

Since 1995 only Ovie and Stamkos have hit 60 (Matthews should get there this year). But over a 14 year span 60+ was reached 31 times. Over the next 27 year span it was reached twice.

It’s super impressive to me that, despite playing in an era where he was often the only 50 goal scorer and some seasons no one in the entire NHL even hit the 50 mark, he has amassed more goals than guys who played in a decade plus where 50-60 goal seasons were as common as 40 is now and even 70+ goal seasons were more common than 60 goals. In fact, I’m all but positive that 80+ happened twice as many times in a 14 year span as 60+ has happened in the following 25 years.

It’s because OV trusts his teammates and coaches to do/know their roles and he will do/know his. He changes completely with each new coach. Doesn’t mean he becomes good in the system , but he does play the system. Luckily the Caps have had a couple recently who actually know something about coaching and aren’t experimenting out there.

As for last night. It’s all very amazing. I’m a little upset as I’m going on Friday night. I think last night was a new goalie victim as well.

9 50 goal seasons under his belt.

Missed 50 goals when he scored 48 in 68 in a shortened season.

If not for the pandemic, Ovechkin would have 10 seasons where he scored 50 or more goals. Unbelievable consistency at such a high level.

The 12-13 season aswell would be a very good shot for 50. He had 32 in 48 meaning a 55 goal pace.

Here's a milestone that I keep bringing up, but it seems like no one else ever talks about:

Gordie Howe's record of most goals for a single franchise: 786 with the Red Wings.

Ovie is now at 780. He needs just 6 more goals to have scored more for Washington than any player in history ever scored for one team.

I still maintain that if Ovi wants to achieve it and play long enough in the NHL, he will hit 1000 goals. If his motivation is to break Gretzky's record then retire (or go back to the KHL), as he has said in the past, then he won't. But if he wants it, 1000 goals is 100% realistic for him. Which is absolutely insane. Guy is such a stud.
