The great 8 is definitely a legend.

I'm a little sick of hearing how Wayne had it easy. Hook, slash, hold, and trap, were all too common in 99's day. A few small ice surfaces - arena's like Buffalo, Boston, Chicago, to boot.

If the bad crosschecks don't get Wayne, his back is much better and ovie never catches him.

the smaller ice surfaces for 3 teams is negligible in your argument...

c'mon. really, how many games did this make a difference on his total production?

If everyone had stayed healthy and played their entire careers in the NHL it would have ended:

1. Lemieux
2. Gretzky
3. Jagr/Ovechkin

Obviously that did not happen, but still :)

If Ovie hits 50 this year that totals 780 career goals.

Let's say he regresses during his next three seasons to these totals:

Age 37 - 43 goals
Age 38 - 37 goals
Age 39 - 30 goals

That would take him to 890 career goals with one season remaining on his current contract.

That third season is where it happens. Yes anything can happen in three years. But, there is no regression. He still looks fine out there. Shot is still lethal. He finds the open space probly better than he did 10-15 years ago.

46, 41, 37. Spring of 2025

Ovechkin - 47 (current season)
Esposito - 40

Age 37 season:

Bucyk - 40
Sakic - 36
Esposito - 34

Age 38 season:

Brett Hull - 37
Bucyk - 31
St Louis - 30

Age 39 season:

Howe - 39
Bucyk - 28
Doan - 28

Age 40 season:

Howe - 44
Bucyk - 36
Selanne - 31

Howe having a 44 goal season at age 40 is insane. The vast majority of NHL players never score 44 even in their peak years.

Looking at this list, I’m confident Ovi can top the following.

- 48 goals at age 36
- 40 goals at age 37
- 37 goals at age 38

Not that insane when you consider it was the beer league era and they had just diluted the talent by 50% by going from 6 to 12 teams.

Except that was the second year of the expansion; the first year Howe "only" had 39 goals. It was also one of the lowest scoring post-war years in history, with the Art Ross winner (Mikita) scoring 87 points.

The top goalscorer in the league that year was Bobby Hull in his prime with 58 goals at the age of 30.

Howe was 5th in the league at the age of 40. It’s comparable to what Ovechkin is doing today at the age of 36.

A few what-ifs...

2012-2013: 32 goals in 48 games
2017-2018: 49 goals, Devils refused to pull their goalie in the final game while trailing
2019-2020: 48 goals in 68 games

Between a lockout, a pandemic, and some plain pettiness, he could have been on the cusp of his 12th 50-goal season right now.

Well the "pettiness" is part of the game - that's on him for not getting 1 more goal earlier :) . Definitely he had a clear chance in 2019-20, and it would have been cool to see the full 2012-13 season.

The man's not stopping though. Age 36 and still top 5 in goals is crazy.
