I have been invested in him breaking this record since I saw how fast he broke 500. Back then i think 9 out of 10 hockey fans were saying no chance. Its been a journey seeing him put up 50 in his late 30s and then the slumps wondering if he can snap out of it.

I honestly wouldn't hate him if he retires after he breaks it after this year or plays another year but I dont see him chasing 1K. Ovi isn't most hockey players who play into their early 40s there is a lot of abuse on that body over the last 20 years.

Every extra year for an athlete at this age is like five. It’s going to be even more difficult for him to keep up. And, I think, it simply would be the right thing for him to do — retire after his current contract ends next year.

He will have accomplished everything by then. There will be nothing else to play for.

Honestly, I just don’t think he is that greedy We, as fans, of course, would love to entertain a 1000 goals idea. But from an athlete’s point of view this is like running up the score — senses have already been dulled, and there is no pleasure from scoring that 8th or 9th goal.

He has 36 goals scored in his last 53 games.

I'm almost certain Ovechkin had a nagging injury throughout the first half of last year. Recovery time drops considerably as one ages.
A boatload of rest at the all-star break seemed to do him wonders.

During the All-Star break, OV went with his family to Dubai and rode a camel!

I thought that he would end up somewhere between 700-750. My concern was that his physical play would cut his career short. But I am so glad that he has proved so many people, including myself, wrong. His durability is absolutely legendary. Just like his goal-scoring skills.

If Ovechkin is still playing at a high level next season, I wouldn't put it out of the question that he signs a 1-year deal, then takes it from there.

It just wasn’t meant to be, unfortunately.

It was a stacked Russian team that spanked the eventual champs, the Swedes, 5-0 in the prelims and knocked out Canada in the quarters. Oh, well.
