Oh, well it's not really the stick itself or the worth (a PSA 10 rookie Ovechkin card will probably be "worth" more monetarily than a 895 stick for example, just the nature of the market). The memory of being there and getting a stick from a legend who just scored what probably nobody else may ever touch after is amazing.

For me, I collect stick precisely because of the memories. Extra special when you were at the game itself too. To me they're worth far more sentimentally than any card could be. It's not about the money at all (would just sell some old hockey cards if I really wanted a stick that was being bid on for example lol).

If it's strictly about the memory and not the money then why tf would you bring up the value of hockey cards in the same paragraph and make it about money?

I gotta get in on this. Incredible. #800, special sauce hatty, less than 100 to go, about to pass Howe to become #2...it's wild to see him at #3 next to two GOATS, and about to be #2.

And then #1.

I don't care if he gets 40 more ENG. He was robbed of seasons in his career and deserves every bit of the ENG's with the normal goals.

800 goals in 1305 games, that is exactly 50 goals/82 game pace which is one he has maintained for 18 years.

It's an astonishing consistency. I remember tuning in to see him in the WJC 20 in both 2003 and 04, because I've heard of this Pavel Bure-like kid with a mean streak. Also watched his first NHL game. Can't believe that was 800 goals ago...Ovie was also a different animal back then, with end to end rushes. But that's part of what's remarkable, how he has transformed his game.

A bonus to his accomplishment is that he proves things could be done today if you're good enough. Always annoying to hear every generation whine about how the old players would be unable to do what they did, yada yada. Well Ovie could, so if you're legend enough, you can.

Also wish an end to the whole "what if not for lockouts". We don't know. Rest really helps. He came back a completely new player after the 2012 lockout. Before that he failed to score 40 goals in the two seasons prior, despite playing almost all the games. Shortened covid seasons with games vs your own division and conference has probably done well for a 35+ guy as well. We just don't know. Point is: He doesn't need the "what ifs". The king of that moniker is Lemieux, who even I as a huge Gretzky fan believe would have scored north of a 1000 goals if healthy and not retiring early etc.

I doubt it. Gordie Howe was an anomaly. Ovi would be lucky to age like Jagr or even Selanne.

It's pretty remarkable how consistent he's been able to be especially at his current age. Off topic but man, Lemieux was at 690 goals in only 915 games which is even more stupidly bonkers.

Actually no it's not. Ovechkin's career adjusted goals per game was higher than Lemieux's through 690 goals.

Yeah it's just a question of if Ovechkin wants to play that long. For example if Ovechkin didn't score a single goal for the rest of the season and then just ended his career like Selanne did from 38 years old and onwards, Ovechkin would end his career with 932 goals. And Selanne had 3 big injuries and a bum hip that bothered him after turning 38, while Ovechkin doesn't get injured.

But the bigger thing that will piss people off is that Ovechkin will most likely break Gretzky's record in less games played than Gretzky.
