I think it's because he's nearing two major milestones, one being #800 and the other being Howe's all time mark. It will probably be quieter once he clears these two milestones.

When Gretzky was approaching his 802nd goal, Howe followed the Kings around for several games, in order to make sure he'd be there in person. By all accounts, Howe was magnanimous towards Gretzky after he tied and then surpassed him. If Howe were still alive, I'd like to imagine he'd also be cheering Ovechkin on.

I also hope that, if Ovechkin approaches #894 in two or three more years, Gretzky does what his idol did, and follows Ovechkin around in order to congratulate him in person right after the game.

If Ovechkin comes close to breaking Gretzky's record, Leonsis said "The Great One" has promised the team that he'll be in attendance for all of the Capitals star's games -- as Howe did for Gretzky when he was chasing Howe's NHL points record in 1989.

Leonsis contrasted Gretzky's commitment to what happens in other sports when records are about to fall.
