Not sure how that game makes people change their tune on Binnington. A good result doesn’t change things. He made a couple big saves late but he still let in a bad one and spent the entire game swimming in his crease and out of position. Have never felt less comfortable with a goalie in net.
I am not a huge fan but we have to give credit where credit is due. Let him have the win.

Ya I think we can give him for his role with the big saves late. At the same time he is far from the reason Canada won and it will be concerning if he is the starter going into the Olympics. Although unfortunately he probably will be.

Just wanted to write a note of appreciation to the whole Canadian roster taking it seriously and getting the job done. These millionaires kill their bodies all season and could have used this a a break but instead they battled hard for their country and proved Canada once again is the best hockey country in the world.

I still feel the transfer of power will soon happen between Canada and the USA. Each year the level of USA gets closer to Canada. Even 10 years ago, the gap was huge, 20 years ago even more. Among the under-15s, the Americans seem to be better. Interest in hockey rises in the USA, falls in Canada.

SO PUMPED THIS MORNING! Wearing my TC jersey!

We needed this. Like Cooper said, this one was really for the country. Loved Trudeau's tweet: You can't take our country, and you can't take our game!
So many arrogant US fans past week, good to see them silenced for awhile.
Like @orrr said a bit ago - we'll put it on the shelf with the others and get ready for the next one!

It is all cyclical. The Americans golden(silver?) generation is right in the middle of their primes right now. Canada had a run of some weaker drafts in the mid to late 10’s. Now we are on a run of having Bedard, Celebrini, Schaefer,McKenna and DuPont in successive years….The Olympics next year really are the moment for the Americans to win it because there is a whole new generation of Canadian studs coming.

I would disagree. This, like the late 90s, is a golden generation for the states of draft years 2015-2019. Ever since then, the players thar they have produced from the preceding drafts have been good, but there are no superstars in there. And Canada is likely to go on a run where they have their best ever drafts over the next 18 months, topped off by perhaps the best ever WHL class (off the back off the academies which have become absolute player factories), whilst it looks incredibly weak for the usa. Both NTDP teams got battered by the WHC17 and CHL teams this year. And I ultimatley think that the NCAA/CHL agreement will hurt american players by taking away spots and top roles from them in NCAA.

Doughty and Marchand both clearly have the skill to be at the top end, but speed wise it's gone. The game in general was extremely fast. Canada will be emphasising speed with the 2026 team.

Mackinnon and McDavid are studs. Stepped up in big games in big ways. McDavid looked off in the third period with some pass wobbles. But he showed throughout the tournament why he is the best player in the world.

Makar is the best defenseman in the world and showed it. I still think he tries to do too much at times, but his skill level is unreal.

Goaltending was our weakness but Binnington was clutch. The Matthews save is a career highlight.

Crosby was great, but looked hurt. He was flying in the Finnish game but since then slowed down a bit. Love seeing him in his Lemieux 02 Olympics role.

Marner looked lost at times, but came in clutch twice. He needs to be there next year and his PK ability is needed.

Reinhart will get trashed, but he played well. I like that he can slide in with both McDavid and Mackinnon.

I'm curious on this mystery flu going around. It must be bad for guys to miss the finals and there must have been sick guys who still played.

Some thoughts on the players, roster makeup, etc:

Binnington deserves a lot of credit for coming up huge for Canada last night. Big game goalie. Lots of people have slagged him over the past week for giving up some softies, but he made up for all of that last night.

The defense was what I would call "very good" overall. There were some defensive lapses and some sloppy play at times in their own zone, but overall the d-men played well. Makar is a huge difference maker, Toews played a strong game overall, I thought Harley played with a lot of confidence and poise for a younger player thrust into a high-pressure situation. Sanheim looked a little out of his depth, usually when the U.S. was able to apply pressure it was Sanheim and Parayko on the ice for it. Parayko is a big boy and battles hard but lacks the puck handling/distribution skills to really be a difference maker at this level. Morrissey is clearly Canada's #2 d-man at this point. Doughty has gone from a young, kind of wild d-man back in 2010 to a veteran getting by on experience and guile. Great performance by Doughty, similar to Niedermayer's performance in 2010. I think he's one of Canada's best international d-men ever.

Up front, not much needs to be said about McDavid and MacKinnon. Crosby wasn't 100%, but was still able to contribute significantly. Point was really, really good next to McDavid. I thought Stone was much too slow for this pace of game; nothing obvious in terms of mistakes, but slow getting to loose pucks, never developed chemistry with his much faster linemates. If he's on the 2026 team I'd like to see him in a depth role instead of riding shotgun with our best skaters. Reinhart got off to a poor start imo but complemented MacKinnon and Crosby well when that line was formed. Reinhart is great at making subtle little connecting plays along the boards and can fit on any line. Wasn't able to connect for a goal, but contributed in the final few games. Bennett was an absolute beast; I would have liked to have seen him up with McDavid in lieu of Stone. Jarvis was good, but would have liked to have seen him bury that opportunity in the 1st period last night. I thought he was very visible last night. Marchand has had a great career, but I think his time at this level of competition is over unfortunately. He's too slow at this point. Marner was fantastic last night, I thought Cooper going to him in the 3rd and OT on the McDavid line was a vote of confidence for him and Marner delivered. Best player on the ice in the late 3rd and obviously the nice feed on the OT winner. The TB boys - Cirelli + Hagel - had their best game of the tournament last night. Driving the puck deep, maintaining possession, laying the body. Nice work. Cirelli (finally) won some key faceoffs in the o-zone in the 3rd too to help keep the pressure on. If they come back in 2026 as a pairing, I'd slot a finisher next to them that can convert on cycle opportunities - maybe Reinhart?

Overall, looking ahead to 2026, a few of these guys will find themselves off the team. But his group of players seemed to enjoy playing with each other and that says a lot. Marchand, maybe Stone, maybe Konecny if a younger player steps up and takes that spot. On D, assuming a healthy Theodore + Pietrangelo I think the bulk of the D is already spoken for so maybe Sanheim gets left off. Who knows. Lot of time and hockey between now and then.

On another note, what in the world was the Canadian team thinking having Gretzky as their honorary captain? Comes out, gives a thumbs up and a smile to the American bench, ignores the Canadian bench, and does his thing.

There was a two-time Canadian Olympic gold medal winner, multiple-time IIHF champion, former Bruins captain with a sterling reputation amongst fans and across all hockey circles, actually in the house last night and they didn't go with Bergeron?

Fewer and fewer licensees in Canada, more and more in the USA. Much more dynamic demographics in the USA. These are irreversible factors.

You're talking about a few guys born between 2005 and 2009. I'm talking to you about a global dynamic.

I’m talking to you about actual players that are coming. We have been hearing about Canadas downfall since the 90’s lol it isn’t going to happen…other countries are absolutely improving though. Not mutually exclusive.

It's funny how hilarious the shit talk was. Apparently to many of the USA hockey fans this game suddenly is "stupid" and "doesn't mean anything"

It meant a lot last weekend.

I see a lot of 'it's 1-1' now. They just don't get it. So cute.
