Some thoughts on the players, roster makeup, etc:
Binnington deserves a lot of credit for coming up huge for Canada last night. Big game goalie. Lots of people have slagged him over the past week for giving up some softies, but he made up for all of that last night.
The defense was what I would call "very good" overall. There were some defensive lapses and some sloppy play at times in their own zone, but overall the d-men played well. Makar is a huge difference maker, Toews played a strong game overall, I thought Harley played with a lot of confidence and poise for a younger player thrust into a high-pressure situation. Sanheim looked a little out of his depth, usually when the U.S. was able to apply pressure it was Sanheim and Parayko on the ice for it. Parayko is a big boy and battles hard but lacks the puck handling/distribution skills to really be a difference maker at this level. Morrissey is clearly Canada's #2 d-man at this point. Doughty has gone from a young, kind of wild d-man back in 2010 to a veteran getting by on experience and guile. Great performance by Doughty, similar to Niedermayer's performance in 2010. I think he's one of Canada's best international d-men ever.
Up front, not much needs to be said about McDavid and MacKinnon. Crosby wasn't 100%, but was still able to contribute significantly. Point was really, really good next to McDavid. I thought Stone was much too slow for this pace of game; nothing obvious in terms of mistakes, but slow getting to loose pucks, never developed chemistry with his much faster linemates. If he's on the 2026 team I'd like to see him in a depth role instead of riding shotgun with our best skaters. Reinhart got off to a poor start imo but complemented MacKinnon and Crosby well when that line was formed. Reinhart is great at making subtle little connecting plays along the boards and can fit on any line. Wasn't able to connect for a goal, but contributed in the final few games. Bennett was an absolute beast; I would have liked to have seen him up with McDavid in lieu of Stone. Jarvis was good, but would have liked to have seen him bury that opportunity in the 1st period last night. I thought he was very visible last night. Marchand has had a great career, but I think his time at this level of competition is over unfortunately. He's too slow at this point. Marner was fantastic last night, I thought Cooper going to him in the 3rd and OT on the McDavid line was a vote of confidence for him and Marner delivered. Best player on the ice in the late 3rd and obviously the nice feed on the OT winner. The TB boys - Cirelli + Hagel - had their best game of the tournament last night. Driving the puck deep, maintaining possession, laying the body. Nice work. Cirelli (finally) won some key faceoffs in the o-zone in the 3rd too to help keep the pressure on. If they come back in 2026 as a pairing, I'd slot a finisher next to them that can convert on cycle opportunities - maybe Reinhart?
Overall, looking ahead to 2026, a few of these guys will find themselves off the team. But his group of players seemed to enjoy playing with each other and that says a lot. Marchand, maybe Stone, maybe Konecny if a younger player steps up and takes that spot. On D, assuming a healthy Theodore + Pietrangelo I think the bulk of the D is already spoken for so maybe Sanheim gets left off. Who knows. Lot of time and hockey between now and then.
On another note, what in the world was the Canadian team thinking having Gretzky as their honorary captain? Comes out, gives a thumbs up and a smile to the American bench, ignores the Canadian bench, and does his thing.
There was a two-time Canadian Olympic gold medal winner, multiple-time IIHF champion, former Bruins captain with a sterling reputation amongst fans and across all hockey circles, actually in the house last night and they didn't go with Bergeron?
