OVECHKIN PULLS CAPITALS EVEN LATE IN THIRD PERIOD TO REACH 889 CAREER GOALS
Alex Ovechkin
tallied a tying marker with 4:00 remaining in regulation to reach 889 career goals and move within six of passing Wayne Gretzky (894) for the most in NHL history. Ovechkin owns a goals-per-game rate of 0.66 this season, which puts him on pace to complete The Gr8 Chase against the Islanders at UBS Arena on April 15 (8 p.m. ET on ESPN) – Ovechkin’s career average of 0.60 also has him tracking to break the record on April 15.

* Ovechkin scored his 57th career goal against the Jets/Thrashers and seventh versus Connor Hellebuyck, who plays under assistant coach Wade Flaherty. Flaherty has his own connection to the NHL goals record – he dressed for the Sharks when Gretzky got his 801st tally to tie Gordie Howe on March 20, 1994, and then manned the Islanders’ crease when he yielded the 894th and final marker of Gretzky’s career on March 29, 1999.

* While creating a legacy on the ice, Ovechkin also is dedicated to leaving a lasting impact on childhood cancer research. From March 5, 2025, through the remainder of his career, Ovechkin will personally donate to pediatric cancer research for each goal he scores and his donations will be matched by Monumental Sports & Entertainment! Click here to help make The Gr8 Chase mean even more by joining Ovi in donating to pediatric cancer research – 100% of funds raised go to lifesaving childhood cancer research through the V Foundation and Hockey Fights Cancer.

He's the greatest goal scorer in the history of the game. He scored tonight despite playing like poop. Both things can be true. Chill. 😉

I think it's more that the standard for playing well vs. poorly changes as players age. He scored a key goal that earned them a point and wasn't a disaster defensively. At his age that's a win.

If it was 2015 I'd expect him to be all over the ice creating chances for three periods. He's definitely had better games this year that is totally fair, and I wouldn't say he played "great" either. He was fine.

When his Ovi’s mom Tatiana (of Soviet basketball fame) was 7 she was hit by a car while walking home from school and broke her leg badly, to the point where it was almost amputated. She missed a year of school convalescing and when she finally returned she was forbidden from participating in gym class.

To strengthen her leg she devised her own rehab program which consisted of wrapping a plastic bag filled with bricks around her foot and doing leg lifts

Just to put Ovi’s broken leg in perspective..
I never heard about this story before. I think it says a lot about where Alex Ovechkin got some of his resilience and winner's mentality from. Motivation through adversity.

Fleury believes he will.

"I think he's going to break the record this year," said Fleury. "He reminds me of young Ovi. He's really hungry, he wants to score goals. He's so happy after his goals. Without his injury, he would've finished the season with 50 goals, it's incredible. He always plays with his foot on the gas, he's a tremendous competitor. He's still as dangerous as ever at 39 years old. He missed several games with a broken leg, but he hasn't slowed down since his return. He's still on fire."

The ultimate troll job would be Gretzky inviting Trump to the games as well.
“Hey guys, what if he owned the libs hyuh hyuh hyuh!!!”

People bring politics into literally everything these days…so annoying. You seriously don’t get enough of this shit everywhere else?

We are witnessing one of the most historic milestones in our sport get surpassed, and this dude is thinking about Trump lmao

Agreed, this is hockey. I'd prefer we stick to speaking out hockey and hockey players, not politicians.

Would be cool if it all came down to the last game of the season vs the pens. ovi needs two to tie/break the record and Sid needs 2 to keep the ppg streak alive
Well this isn’t possible of course as Crosby only needs 1 more point right now…suspect that comes before this game as well…unlikely he goes scoreless for the next 8-9 games.

For Ovechkin though, it could very well happen that games. Think that will be his 11th game from now and he needs 6 goals…pace would have him getting there in game 10, so it’s real close

From a person who was born into Pittsburgh everything, meaning I'm not exactly a Washington fan lol, Ovechkin is without a doubt the greatest goal scorer of all time and top 10 player ever. I've really grown to appreciate how dominant Ovi has been at putting pucks in the net, on a historical scale.

The longevity really does it for me. If not for the knee injury, he's probably a 50 goal scorer at 39. Add that to the durability and the career is extremely impressive. For a guy who plays a hard game, he's held up as well as anyone in league history, over a 2 decade stretch.

I hope Sid and Ovi can somehow get 1 more showdown in the postseason before they both decide to hang them up, but given the state of the Pens now, I'm not putting any money on that happening.

Regardless, 8 will be getting a big round of applause from this Pens faithful when the record falls and he eventually decides to retire. Legendary career.
