Most wouldn't. I don't see the argument over Lemieux or Orr despite their lack of or staggered longevity.Yet some on here will claim he isn't one of the top four players of all time.

Man, he might actually do it this year. Amazing. An unassailable all-timer a la Barry Bonds.

Howe is indisputable for me. Probably number two because of his career value. Between Lemieux and Orr, it's hard to say. Maybe Orr due to the influence he had on the game.If Howe isn’t in the top four, who currently is?

I have him at 5/6 and I don’t care what others sayI was wrong
I had him poetically falling 8 shy of the record
Firmly in the top 10 best players ever imo
O Captain! My Captain!!!
Love that guy
Lol. As a Canucks fan my entire life, without seeing that post earlier, I wouldn't have guessed the Canucks were the team that Gretzky scored his record breaking goal on.13 games remaining, 6 to tie, 7 to break. Does he do it this year? It's going to be close and the pressure is going to build. I really hope he does it this year so he can just relax next year or retire, whichever he decides. Current pace would indicate he should make it, without any hiccups.
I also wonder if any team will pull the goalie a little more liberally just to give him the chance at history and make sure their team is remembered. Empty netter to tie or take the lead is a double edged sword. When Gretzky set the 50 goals in 39 games record, empty net. Clip is very famous, empty net and Flyer's cooperalls. Mind you he scored 9 goals across 2 games![]()
I’m far less excited about this as a hockey fan than I should be. Anyone else feel the same?
I will be transparent. I wonder if I would be more into it if it was a Canadian doing it. I’m not sure.
Personally i dont care about nationality, its not important for me with a NHL team having all typesI’m far less excited about this as a hockey fan than I should be. Anyone else feel the same?

So OV scored his 148th first goal of the game, all time leader ahead of Jagr with 135.

What is mind boggling is how low Gretz is on that list, he is #35 with only 85, one behind Rick Nash.
At first I thought it is some stats issue, eg not counting some early seasons, but it looks accurate. I wonder why so low, did he usually take his sweet time to score in a game or what? Were Oilers so dominant/rounded that 1G was scored "by committee"?
Why???![]()
I was being honest and I knew that I leave myself open for comments about not being a real fan. That’s ok.I guess this might come off mean but if you aren't excited about this I'm not sure you can call yourself a hockey fan. Breaking a gretz record is like seeing haleys comet.
you feel what you feel, nothing wrong with that, i like BettmanI was being honest and I knew that I leave myself open for comments about not being a real fan. That’s ok.
I hate to put Ovi in a bad light in this thread, but i feel i must defend the Great One a little bit, Ovi GWP per game 0.16 Wayne 0.226It’s yet another symptom of Gretzky having played in an insanely high-scoring era, and having the bulk of his goals occur during that era’s peak. Scoring 90 goals in a season where his team was typically putting a 6-spot means each individual goal was less likely to be the first goal scored in a given game than for players scoring goals in other eras., particularly Ovechkin, who played his peak years at a time when scoring was very low.
You see it in reflected in a lot of Gretzky’s stats, like how he’s not near the top in GWG either.
Hank Aaron hit 40 homers in his age 39 season to finish with 713 career homers at the end of the 1973 MLB season.somehow I’m very confident he finishes the season with 894 to keep people waiting for a few months
Primary assists, no less. Two assists so far today.
