As for Ovechkin, the goal I remember more than others is the one he scored while falling on his ass. Otherwise, Ovechkin's career looks like a really big flip-book of goals scored from his 'office'.
He didn't even work in that office until Adam Oates put him there half way through his career.

Just checked the Caps home game tickets for the last 3 games of the season, they all start at $130 already

The last home game is against Columbus which Ovechkin also scored his first 2 career goals. I would allow him to score his record breaking goal against Columbus too :sarcasm:
I'm banking on the away game in Columbus while eye balling tickets with my dad. We were both at game 1 where he scored 2 hoping we can witness 895

It's easy to forget how incredible he was in his prime, just an absolute force of nature.
i remember at the time thinking that the most dynamic, smashing, all around awesome line would be Ovechkin - Forsberg - Lindros. (ya Lindros is a center)

It was a huge thing at the time for me to think that of Ovie because the other two were so jaw-dropping at their best.

Just a mad, rabid Rottweiler of a player. Only ever seen so many TRULY talented big guys play that hard, haphazard even.

That's cool. I remember the news surrounding Gretzky breaking the record, but I couldn't get a mental picture of the goal itself.

Really, did you miss the first 10 years of his career?

Once again an empty net goal. I'm giving my best effort to remain objective, but I must confess that I'm far from impressed. It is sad to admit but Ovechkin is a one-trick pony. That one trick used to be one-timers and now he has reinvented himself as his only trick is scoring empty netters. Don't get me wrong, I still like the guy and I definitely think he has had a fine career overall.
Are your feelings still hurt because Ovie used to chase Malkin around the ice bullying him with checks like he was his little brother? They made up, they're buddies now, it's ok to let it go. Do you need a hug?

It matters to me - which is why I posted my opinion.

You don't seem to be expressing one? Other than sad resignation that it's inevitable.
I guess it might matter to some people for different reasons but at the end of the day history will show the number of goals and Ovi will be the leader and is unlikely to be caught baring some unforeseen transformation in any future NHL.

In short the historical record will just state the number of goals and his placement.

That will solidify him as a top 6 player of all time

Gretzky
Lemieux
Orr
Howe
Crosby
Ovechkin
I don't want to derail this thread, but why doesn't Messier ever appear on these lists? He is right there at the top of those all time lists, and he won a bunch of Cups. Is it because most think he was / is an asshole? lol serious question.

Other notables: Jagr, Francis, Yzerman.

It really doesn't matter at this point does it?
Me and wetcoast don't always see eye to eye but I think this is an interesting perspective. Why does the goal record matter in the first place? Why not just look at points instead? Both goals and assists have the same value: 1 point each. I think this might be just very selective cherry-picking of statistics. I mean, yes, the record is nice but at the end of the day, kinda trivial. I think the record tells more about Ovechkin's selfishness. In my humble opinion, he doesn't make his linemates better like Sid the Kid does. Still, Ovechkin has a great shot and I respect it tremendeously.

Suuurrrre.

You'd be gobbling Malkin if he was at 878 right now.

- goals don't matter much
- trivial record
- scoring is selfish

Look out bro, you generate so many gems the oppressive regimes are going to kidnap you!
